I talked to an actual human from network planning over the summer and they said red eyes are a minimum two year project due to technology, operations, and planning concerns. She said they are a thing in the puzzle palace and will eventually happen but she doesn't know when they will be a thing in the real world.
I personally have done enough flying on that side of the clock to never want to do it again, but I welcome it as an option for our little operation. Increased organic aircraft utilization and block hours are a good thing no matter how you slice it.

Basically, the story goes - we make more money on the flights during the day than we would for red eyes even if both are full. So why use airplane hours (our limited resource) for less money?
