I've guessing that connecting pax from SJO is not as easy as setting up BNA-MKE. Does Costa Rica allow unlimited fifth freedom rights flying?

LOL. And yes, there is no way SWA will have a base outside the US in the near future.

Agree on all points.
I talked to an actual human from network planning over the summer and they said red eyes are a minimum two year project due to technology, operations, and planning concerns. She said they are a thing in the puzzle palace and will eventually happen but she doesn't know when they will be a thing in the real world.
I personally have done enough flying on that side of the clock to never want to do it again, but I welcome it as an option for our little operation. Increased organic aircraft utilization and block hours are a good thing no matter how you slice it.

Two years? wow

I once heard a big reason we didn’t do them was money earned to resource expended. Basically, the story goes - we make more money on the flights during the day than we would for red eyes even if both are full. So why use airplane hours (our limited resource) for less money? Like I said, heard once, don’t know if it’s true. Sounds like a koolaid answer. As said above, more block means more pilots… so sweet!

They’re obviously not talking to the people scheduling the Max-8 for interisland Hawaii flights.

Nothing we do isn’t stupid.

There's a rumor elsewhere on APC that Skywest is going to start doing interisland flying for SWA (which is permitted under existing scope).

May you live in interesting times.

They desperately need red eyes coming back from Hawaii. My daughter flew United and Alaska on her last two Hawaii trips because we have no good way to get back to anywhere but California.

People who live Mountain time zone and east want to fly the red eye back so they can get their full last day there and then have a day to reset after their trip.

And if so, thanks to the dolts that voted yes to weaken the best scope/codeshare language in the industry. And for getting nothing for it in return.
