Was never about the money for me. I'm glad you're happy though. Different strokes for different folks!

This. Just before I got hired here I was offered a great Corporate job. I would have been furloughed in under two years if I accepted it.

And folks were only a couple months from being furloughed here as well. Won’t forget that. Ever.

I am considering putting in an app for SWA but am unsure of how doable this scenario would be.

I understand that MDW is a junior base, and because of that I’d be banking on getting based out of there early on.

I have family 1.5 hours from MDW that I could stay with while on reserve. My wife and I would like to live 1-1.5 hours from Grand Rapids, MI. I see daily flights out of GRR.

Is this a realistic commute? Anyone with experience able to describe what this might look like? How early I’d have to fly in? How likely is it I’ll be able to get on a flight out of GRR? What happens if I’m not able to get on a flight out of GRR?

Any advice or insight is much appreciated!

If you can drive from your home to your domicile in 3 hours, I don’t know why anyone would choose to commute via air instead. Seriously - just get in your car and drive. It’s not worth the hassle of the airline commute in order to try and save 20 minutes of your time.

I am a 3 hour drive from a domicile, and I fly to another one. I gave it a try for about nine months, but it just wasn't for me. I had enough close calls in traffic and dealing with fatigue driving that I decided to quit doing it in the name of safety.

Commuting by air, while awful, does have a few minor advantages too. One of these is that if your trip gets rerouted into deadheads back to base, you can just punch out and go home via air. I had this happen a couple of times during my driving phase and had to go and retrieve my car and drive the three hours back home. Painful.

Commuting from MCI

Good afternoon. I have an interview with SWA at the end of March. My family is established for at least the next 5-6 years in Kansas City because of our kid’s schooling and sports. No matter which airline (if any, God willing) offers me a job I will be commuting. I know the rumors of MCI or BNA becoming a pilot base but I am not basing any decision on that. Reading around the forums it looks like MDW is still a junior base and there are several flights from MCI to MDW and ORD every day so I assume that would be the best place to commute to from MCI. I am also wondering about the seniority at DEN, is that a base that a new hire might be able to get shortly after training? Still trying to learn about all this after the last 16 years flying in the military. Thanks for any advice.
