Quote: I'm not a marketing genius by any stretch but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I would venture a guess that buying one extra seat so an overweight passenger can be comfortable every now and then is cheaper than either retrofitting the cabins to add space for bigger passengers, or having to spend the money to fight the battle as the villain in a social media campaign against the company for making someone feel bad about their size. These are small dollars once in a blue moon. We look better accommodating them than we would fighting them.

Plus it prevents a bad experience for whoever would have otherwise been in the seat next to that person.

I know it's not in pilot nature to assume positive intent, or to refrain from belittling someone due to their appearance... but I'm going to try to buck the trend here.
Good points. The irony is obesity is the number one killer of Americans and we’re saying “go ahead and die younger” because of wokeness, like that is more sensitive.

Always appreciate your opinions.. but 39.4% of the US population is considered obese and could potentially ask for an extra seat if desired. That’s a lot of lost revenue, even if the intent is genuine.

Ok. So assume they're going to fly regardless. Then we lose the future revenue from the poor soul who is stuck next to them for the next five hours. Or we risk a cabin altercation. Or a social media disaster.

it's a real problem, I agree. Heck, I'm 50 and really watch what I eat and I see the scale creeping up too.

I think this is the best possible solution. The lost revenue will be absorbed by the remaining passengers for better or for worse. Once that seat is out of inventory I'm sure there's some sort of capacity pricing system that increases the price on remaining seats.

Not to mention just one of the influencers has over a million views on the first day alone of her posting about how good this was of WN. Plus she talked about how comfortable it was. You can be upset about it but it was a genius marketing move by the company. Probably saved us millions in ad revenue and exposure because while sure, we may offer a free seat here and there, a lot of non fat people also read the story, that’s marketing.

I know we all like to think we know how to run a company like this and that we are led by morons, but this was a smart move.

Just to clarify this wasn’t directed at you Zap.

Also I am not condoning unhealthy behaviors, just saying it was a smart marketing move.

Didn't take long for people to figure out their "service" animal flew for free. Or that your "medical issue" gets you to the front of the boarding line for free. How long before this latest free benefit is abused? They going to require you to step on a scale or tape your waist? Talk about a social media disaster. No, it's going to be self policed and history shows how well that works out.

Its human nature to game the system. Look at our CBA. We have 20 page threads on how to game the system. Yes, we will have guests who take advantage of this offer. Apparently WN thinks the pros outweigh the cons.

Quote: BIG TAKEAWAY….—->He said that anyone that has left for United, Delta and American will regret leaving after seeing this contract… (caveat… unless they NEED to have that wide body feather in their hat.).
This worries me because it sounds like a sales job.

From all the NC has put out so far, it looks they have covered a lot of ground to bring us up to the level of the legacies from a work rules & benefits standpoint. But they had a ton of ground to cover. A lot of the work rule gains are things we should have had a decade ago, reserve proffering, training bid etc. If we achieve legacy 757 pay rates we will likely still trail in career earnings.

Leg change override sounds great but if it's the windfall he claims, swa will either fix themselves, or over hire with reserves within a few years to alleviate all the premium.

I don't need to fly a widebody but I do need to avoid 5am reports and 2am release times. I'm past v1 but I had left in the past 2 years I doubt 757 plus a nickel would inspire any regret given Deltas profit sharing forecast.

Hopefully I'll eat my words, at this point it sounds like we just about have a ratifiable agreement but I'm highly skeptical it's the home run that Tom is making it out to be.

Q1/Q2 the shoulder stuff is supposed to go away with earliest departure around 6 am local. We will never have career legacy earnings as long as they have street captains and 1 yr 767 upgrades....there's no competing with that at an LCC, even if we have 757 rates and 20% NEC.

Totally agreed that he sounds like he’s trying to sell it.
