Default Chinese MAXs

So with the Tariff War going on between the US and China, there has been news that Chinese airline won't take MAXs they had on order. I also read there was a MAX on its delivery flight over the Pacific that turned around back to the US because the carrier didn't want it due to tariffs.

So with all these MAXs now just sitting around, is there any chance that maybe SWA can swoop in and snag some of them? Even if we don't grow the fleet (Getting these MAXs and getting rid of more 800s) that's got to be an attractive option to the company.

Those particular planes had the cabins already configured. I am sure they will sit in Seattle until this thing gets figured out.
As for future orders...don't know. I am not so sure SWA wants a bunch of new deliveries despite what they say.

Changing a paint job and moving seats around is a pain and not without cost but will start to make sense if this drags on for 6 months and still with no end in sight and/or the carriers involved put in a big order with Airbus.

Boeing needs cash flow and eventually they'll need the ramp space.

The only NTU’s that WN took were about 15 frames that were supposed to go to Spicejet. I don’t know the specific details on why those were taken and not other frames that were also available at the time. I also don’t know if the Spicejet frames were already built and painted or not. WN doesn’t typically take other Airlines new build frames probably because they already get nearly 1 out of every 4 MAX’s produced as it is already.

They had been built and painted. There were pictures of the Spice Jet tails going around when that deal was announced.

as for these Chinese-bound jets, I’m guessing there are airlines without the steep discounts we have that also want the jets…

“Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas said on Monday the Saudi startup carrier would be ready to buy Boeing aircraft destined for Chinese airlines if they are not delivered due to the escalating trade war between the US and China”
