When we locked up the mentally ill, a lot of this stuff didn't happen.

I'm in favor of treating them. While they're locked up, until they can function in society.

You’re assuming that treatment occurs while they’re locked up. Even if you’re a well educated, decently resourced person with people who care about you, there’s a fair chance that’s not going to happen. Most people who are committed to a psychiatric hospital do not fit that description.

Kegan Gill (navy hornet dude) ended up in one after being overprescribed. Starts at around 1:10. Prior to that, the prelude to his story is interesting.
