It's called "shoot me a line", and it works good. Lasts long time.

It should be the same procedure for "drawing a fence." It is easy.

It's the same logic as the MD-11. Delta might have that knowledge floating around Atlanta.

27 driver said it.

'clear the turn point' and the FMS extends a direct line from the last point in list to infinty. It just doesn't draw it on the display. Once you are wings level (must be wings level!) hit 'Nav' and it'll capture the course.

I came to the 717 from the 737. I loved the box in the 737. I think the 717 box is a spawn of satan.

Have fun!

I think his question is how to (simply) make an extended centerline from the FAF which is LNAV interceptable. In most Boeings it's a simple process, make it the active waypoint and either enter the inbound course in the boxes or push the 6r button and execute.

You can. When you are on a Vector HDG for LOC Intercept, Simply hit the direct key to the Desired FIX. Enter a Slash "/" followed by the inbound course. ie, " /271 " . It presents a Nice Magenta line with a Tail off the Direct To FIX and gives you NAV/Prof (VNAV for u Boeing guys) protection.

Disclaimer, I do not Fly the MD90 or 717. I am making a BIG assumption the FMS is like the MD11.

oops...sorry. Saw you mentioned using Direct To 1st. That sounds the same.

Use the last mentioned procedure (direct to FAF and insert the inbound course on 1R e.g. Select direct JACKO and insert JACKO/123 or whatever the final approach course is). If you are given a further heading change before intercept, simply wait until you are wings level, then repeat the exact same thing. Only takes a second or 2. Can also do that with any other course to any fix and keep your lines "clean" on the ND as you get vectored around. You can very rapidly build a map using PBDs that will keep your PROFometer honest, too. Say you are expecting a visual to runway 18. Set up either a visual or ILS to that runway and drop "RW18/-3" or however long of a final you want onto the runway in the flight plan. Then start building PBDs off that. The fix will show up as "RW1803". For let's say a left base to final, put "RW1803/270/3" in the scratchpad, then drop it on the fix. You now have a base leg fix called something like "RW1/273" (can't remember the format exactly haven't flown the 71 in a while, just try it in your secondary flight plan and you will see). You can build a very accurate approach map anywhere, quickly, which will keep the vertical profile valid. That will keep the track miles on the PROG page and hence the vertical PROFile correct. The other method will not keep a valid vertical profile in the box, since it doesn't know how you plan to get to the invisible course.

Or just use 2 to 1 plus 15 and idle clamp it down at 290-320 to hit 10000 at 30 miles and 250, 20 at 7000, 15 at 5200, start slowing around 10 and configuring around 5-8 miles out as you slow level or close to it. Airplane flies like a sportscar, you will love it. And the box is only Satanic because you are a Boeing guy. It is very similar to the Airbus with the lat-revs and all.

UPS did something similar when the Feds shoved the DC8's up their backside tail first...
