Somewhere along the line the BS balloon is going burst and it won't be pretty.

If words can be "violence", then traditions like that can be "hazing".

What a bunch of crap. We fully participated with that tradition. Everyone was great about it--everyone.

I'm failing to understand how honoring the oldest and the most senior person in class and designating him/her as a class leader or welcoming the youngest and the juniormost pilot in the company and having some fun in the process amounts to age discrimination... Most guys would add something to the cane or the baby rattle and designate it from the member of that class...

Hell, when our class had luncheon with Gary and the top management, our class leader and our class baby both dragged their rattle with them to the restaurant.

I can already see the next thing on the chopping block - class charity donations. If some butt-hurt individual's charity doesn't get accepted, he/she will claim some sort of discrimination/objection and that's also gonna come to an end...

I was in the big D for upgrade a few months ago. Hadn't been to the GO in years. Didn't recognized the place at all. Just another cold, impersonal place to house cubicles.

I just finished new hire training at JetBlue and we have the same tradition. I was the most junior in the class, known as the Caboose and the most senior guy was known as the Owl. We both had a Rattle and Cane respectively with all sorts of added tokens over the years. It was all in good fun, our inflight compatriots commandeered it a few times and we got it back via a few negotiated beverages. It got old after awhile, but really it was all in good fun and fostered good socialization in my opinion.

We had the tradition of the pacifier for the young one when I was hired at Continental (9 years ago). Not a soul had an issue with it.
