First off, there are already ways around the estate tax (ex: irrevocable trusts). Removal of this isn’t going to change the deficit any noticeable amount. It’s just going to make it easier for the ultra-wealthy to transfer assets tax-free. Assets that are already being/ have been taxed btw.
Secondly, our people need to educate themselves on how the rich actually pay taxes. Two of the biggest ways are long term capital gains, and owning companies where they take the majority of their profits from dividends, while paying themselves a “reasonable salary”. Both of which are taxed at 20%. I knew a woman who owned a company and lived in a $5 million home. She paid herself a salary of $70k per year. How did she do that?! She took most of her income as dividends. Another guy, who has $50 million dollars can basically take 3% every year ($1.5 million), pay only 20% tax, and never touch the principle.
Neither side of the aisle has seriously tried to tax the rich more. Notice how the Liberals are fired up about lowering corporate taxes? Corporations should be taxed at Zero percent. The taxable event should occur when the corporation pays an actual person, who then goes out and buys whatever he/she wants. If this happened, the corporation would then be free to reinvest and possibly hire more people or increase wages etc. Then when the execs take their payment (in whatever form it is), they should be subject to the same tax rate as everyone else based on the income they acquired for that year. This whole liberal argument is a diversion from the fact that they don’t want the ultra wealthy to really have to give up their 20% tax rate any more than the Republicans do.
