Default Filtered Bleed Air?

Hey there. So it’s no question you guys have had some awful encounters of “Wet Sock”. I know of the crew in 2015 ORD-BOS of which the Captain passed away a couple months later. I believe the FO no longer flies.

I just heard of another very unsettling instance back in January 2018. Akron-FLL.

I have had an episode of “Wet Sock” and ever since have read as much as I can about it. I read something interesting, recently, on Aerotoxic.org.

It said Easy Jet and Spirit Airlines have committed to Filtered Air. Now I found an article about Easy Jet and how they have already begun testing etc, but there is nothing I can find about Spirit.

Is this something that is legitimately in the works over there? Has your management said this is going to be addressed and implemented?

I really really hope so. It will only force the hands of other Bus operators if you guys are one of the first. We as crew and passengers deserve it.

Thank you.

The FO is still flying and upgraded almost 3 years ago.

Spirit installed carbon HEPA filters to reduce odors/VOC’s in 2016. They (with the help of said FO) developed and implemented an odors/fumes COM procedure. And they have committed to installing Pall Aerospace bleed filters and sensors. The final stages of the STC is to be completed and rolled out late 2018/early 2019.

We’d all like to think it’s for our health and safety, but I’m sure they see a marketing advantage to be on the front of this wave. Getting airlines/manufacturers/crew/passengers to admit it’s a real thing is hard enough. Getting them all to open their wallets to cover the costs of prevention is even more difficult. Spirit seems to have been early on both aspects of this issue, the reason almost doesn’t matter to me.
