Wow! This is a hot topic. FWIW I’m with the standardized uniform guys. I certainly understand the arguments against it, but things have gotten out of hand IMO. I’d say 30% of the pilots I take an airplane from are wearing some off the shelf jacket/sweater. I’ve even seen cammo and logo sweatshirts - not to mention the guy I saw wearing a completely different airlines blazer. It’s all about professionalism and public image. If we want to be treated like a group of organized professionals, we should be dressing the part.

You say this like we don't get treated like "organized professionals". Is this an issue you or people are having as a result of your 30% out of hand people?

The company can't be bothered with such mundane tasks as new hire uniforms or epaulets for upgrades. And when they do provide a uniform replacement it's of the absolute lowest quality and cut. The company provided items are made out of burlap and cut for maternity shaped pilots. You're stressing way too much for something our company couldn't care less on. Wear what you have or want and make just sure you look professional. Otherwise go apply at Delta and monitor guard for us all.

Has anyone proposed to the company of making an approved pilot sweater? It'd be real simple, just take the black zip-up sweater the flight attendants wear and add shoulder tabs.

FOM 3.7 and 3.7.1

Not rocket science.

I think you misunderstood me a bit. What I was emphasizing was that public image is important. Pilots have lost a lot of respect in the US. It can be downright shocking how much more respect one in uniform gets internationally. Personally, I think at least a small part of this is due to certain pilots not dressing/acting professional in public. Ear buds, dirty/stained shirts, backpacks, and hoodies do nothing to instill public confidence.

A pilot who’s dressed well and in a uniform blazer on the other hand...

Would any of us stand on a picket line in a non-standard uniform. No, because of the image it portrays. So why is non-standard ok on the day to day.

Thanks for the entertainment. This has been awesome reading.

To all the pilots who think it is okay to wear whatever TF you want, it is not necessarily about the clothing, jacket, sweater, etc. It is about following company rules. FOM 3.7. If a captain you are flying with comments on your uniform it may just be because our FOM requires the captain to "...monitor and counsel other flight deck crew members with respect to uniform standards..."

To all the pilots against wearing whatever TF you want, you will never convince the others because they likely do not believe the rules apply to them and that they may think their way is better. Whatever.

Until the company shows that they give a sh*t let everyone do their own thing. Some will follow the rules, some won't. When the hammer falls either way, if it ever does, some will be righteous, some won't.

We all know which pilot we want to be, right, wrong, or indifferent.

As far as I know, the company is coming out with a new uniform, so I can understand them, and us, not really giving 2 sh*ts about the current state of our [uniform]. Let's let it play out and see what the new uniform looks like. I have even heard that it may include a cutout for North Face [like] jackets and sweaters. Maybe we can get a clause in there for dockers, black tennis shoes, and backpacks. Then maybe everyone can be happy.

I mean...FOM 3.7.1 also doesn't give that much guidance either... for shoes? "...must be plain-toe, black." That's it? Does it even mention what color our pants, jackets, and ties must be? No wonder people are creative.
