In uniform, out of uniform, pilot, FA, online, offline, DH, commuter, standby, it doesn't really matter, always check in. Jumpseating and pass riding are privileges, not entitlements. Show gratitude, be humble, and offer assistance as an additional crew resource if needed.

Because why? You don't feel it's important the crew up front knows they have an additional resource in the back?

I agree on pass riding, I meant to say standby, as in commuting.

I don't think it's distracting in the least, there are plenty of breaks in the preflight action to introduce oneself.

You could do it middle school style and write a note on a piece of paper and give it to the lead to give it to the captain. ;)
