Having 4 days off guaranteed if you commute on reserve is clutch. One would burn a partial day off, so having that 4th day is very nice.

Commuting west to a late reserve period isn’t too bad if you don’t mind redeyes . Can commute the same day and get auto released super early on your last day.

Reserve while living in base really isn't that bad, except that we can't swap reserve days around. I understand that they don't want reserves dropping R days and intentionally checkerboarding the schedule, but I never understood why we can't swap green for green or especially green for red since it has a mutual benefit for both parties. Heck even the regionals let us do it that way.

because it was abused with the checker boarding last contract apparently. That is one thing that would be nice to have back. We had it temporarily during Covid and it was actually considered a plus for the company. Was part of the cost saving to save the last handful of pilots from furlough.

I think the main issue is not having any option of dropping reserve days, that sucks. I also feel like our way of scheduling reserve pilots sucks. It should be on availability and seniority in my opinion. If you are junior and there is a day trip, send it to them even if they have 5 days in their schedule.

Too many people abused that in the past. In 4 day bucket, a 4 day trip pops in and they’d drop a day.

I don’t see why we couldn’t try to get that back with limitations.

All FOs will go through it although you can then opt not to upgrade until you are senior enough to hold a line in the base upgrade vacancy you are bidding for. Last I checked NK had about 200 FOs senior to the junior CA, either because they didn’t want to switch to a junior base to upgrade or didn’t want to upgrade at all until they could do so without being on reserve.

If you are going to commute rather than live in base it is a consideration, perhaps even a ‘gotcha’ for some people. But the ability to have the QOL NK has as a line holder and readily drop trips sort of makes it a necessity. If you are going to drop it, SOMEONE will have to fly it.
Thanks.
How long on reserve for someone hired in the near future?
How much is short call vs. long call? Does long call go senior?

And, this is not for the email quoted above, but a gotcha example would have been if you all said the company just made more days red and tried to make the union deal with it.

Doing what the rules allow is not abuse.

you can technically but it never works as you might think.

they just “notate” your preferences and still assign the trip in bucket order.
