SLOP

Lots of heavies traversing between ME to SE Asia. Depending on winds SLOP is SOP. Same on published routes between US and NZ and Australia.

SLOP’d the hell out of Africa.

but we don’t fly to Africa. And even though South America is decades ahead of the Dark Continent ATC wise, I still feel much better offsetting just because I’ve seen what happens when you don’t.

Also, wake turbulence becomes an issue; everyone flies the same route, and last thing I need is an upset because a 777 flew right overhead opposite direction 1,000’ above...

There's more good info here than in our FOM. Its sad that I have to say that.

FOM/OP Specs here at Spirit says SLOP is optional up to 2nm right of the airway. Not required. WATRS routes aren’t exactly busy like some of the other areas talked about on here.

The captain someone talked about who deleted the SLOP should have read the FOM where it says in bold that you don’t need permission to use it.

Perhaps the Captain simply just didn’t want that flight to operate with an offset? It’s still their authority whether or not to SLOP

Nope, they simply did not know what SLOP is/was. Even if they did, that’s a very petty area to exercise captain authority, being that it’s an established and encouraged program, recognized by the company in the FOM, and an example of good airmanship.

There’s a lot of people who don’t know what SLOP is; I remember following Lufthansa one time over the tracks listening to them seeking permission to SLOP over the HF. For an hour.
