China virus aside. If it’s hot and ground cart or jetway is inadequate use the apu. If you need water pressure for hand washing use APU.
so many line pilots don’t commute or DH very much. They have no idea how stagnant and hot it gets in the back of the plane waiting to hook up ground air. And being selfish pilots they get GPU connected and split instead of making sure row 30 is getting air. This is the main problem with not running the APU when parking. Well this and sucking up air hoses or people. I don’t leave or stop cooling until ground air is connected or more than 2/3 of the airplane is empty. |

I think the packs provide way more airflow than the ground and gate carts. Less stagnant air sitting.
FWIW, I know we have our share of sheep around here, but there is no way I would allow a company "guideline" dictate my decision making in regards to the safety of pax or crew. If its to hot ......run the APU.......if your going into a station that routinely takes forever to hook ground power.......run the APU........ its not like your going to be flogged or something! |

Not sure about anyone else, but I have been disregarding the company’s guidance about how they want us to use the apu. I have been starting it and running the packs from the time I get on the plane until the time I walk off. My health and the high potential of being exposed is more of a concern than saving the company money at this point with apu fuel burns and cycles. Reason being is that I think the packs provide better air quality, more airflow and hospital grade hepa filters.
I have been on a dh today and yesterday and both times the crew is still sitting there waiting 15 mins prior with it 80* in the back before starting the apu. Just mind boggling being a company robot. |
I run the APU on the ground now too, but I don’t do it for the air, I do it so that when pax are on the airplane, they have water to wash their hands... I rate that higher than air.
besides with the loads starting to drop off ground crews are asking 35-40 minutes prior to departure to disconnect power and air because they’re done loading the bags... |

Not backtracking, lol. There are a whole list of reasons why I like to run the apu. If you prefer to not, fine. I’ll just be glad if I don’t DH on your flights.
