Default Usage of apu

Not sure about anyone else, but I have been disregarding the company’s guidance about how they want us to use the apu. I have been starting it and running the packs from the time I get on the plane until the time I walk off. My health and the high potential of being exposed is more of a concern than saving the company money at this point with apu fuel burns and cycles. Reason being is that I think the packs provide better air quality, more airflow and hospital grade hepa filters.
I have been on a dh today and yesterday and both times the crew is still sitting there waiting 15 mins prior with it 80* in the back before starting the apu. Just mind boggling being a company robot.

Have you thought about reaching out to the company with your ideas instead of APC?

Thought our Environmental Standards Committee would have thought of this, or our ALPA Safety committee would have offered guidance after the engine incident and with viruses floating around now. But I guess I’m the only genius that thinks about it filtering out 99.97% of particles in the air.

I totally agree with you, I have sent an email in to DW and the union.

A box of Sani-Coms and some hand sanitizer in all the cockpits would be a nice gesture, too.

Unless you bus is different from my bus, the HEPA filters are in the cabin recirc system not the pack outlet.

Makes sense if you think about it, no real need to filter outside air/pack air.

How do the packs provide better air quality? The ground air carts blast air from outside and the hepa filters work regardless of pack operation. They filter the recirc air. Open the vents if you want filtered air. If you're starting it because it's hot, that's different.

I sent an email to my base chief pilot a couple of days ago. However, it was regarding apu bleed use for water pressure and hand washing. No response so far, I’ll have to send one to the union.

I think the packs provide way more airflow than the ground and gate carts. Less stagnant air sitting.
