You do realize the masks protect you from the crew and not the other way around? CDC recommendations for masks are for those showing symptoms.

From here:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...r-use-faq.html
  • The role of facemasks is for patient source control, to prevent contamination of the surrounding area when a person coughs or sneezes.  Patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 should wear a facemask until they are isolated in a hospital or at home. The patient does not need to wear a facemask while isolated.

What is the factual basis for this astonishing pronouncement? If true, that would be fantastic news that should be on every network, something red and blue could be happy about.

It has been this way from the start...it's been all over the media/CDC, etc., etc.

Why do medical workers wear masks if the patients are already sick? The masks work both ways. To help filter the pathogens and to prevent sick people from infecting others.

Read the whole link. I was commenting on the masks flight crews wear. The link describes the full use and purpose of each mask. I don’t know more than the CDC. Read the link.

Patients who wear masks to help prevent others from getting sick do not always wear them, particularly when nurses and doctors are performing tests, cleaning, treating them etc. Their masks protect them while in very close contact with people who are sick and breathing/sneezing/coughing etc.

This is far different from people wearing masks while walking down a street staying a reasonable distance from others.

The CDC advice on masks reflects the fact that there simply weren’t enough of them to go around and they wanted them reserved to protecting the MOST EXPOSED people, ie., healthcare workers actually working with contagious patients, since in Wuhan it was these highly exposed people who were not just most often infected but most severely infected as well, since the “head start” the virus gets over the immune system of the body is greatly affected by the initial number of infecting virions and even young medical personnel were having their bodies overwhelmed by high titre initial infections from their proximity to all the sickees.

if you’ve ever been in the military you know that the chem warfare defense ensembles double as biowarfare protection and that you damn sure wear the protective mask yourself. That’s why EVERYONE had a mask.

But when you farm out your mask production to China and they need it all themselves and literally recall the ships carrying it in mid-ocean, you make whatever compromises in the ideal you need to to get the best result with the resources you have.

Which is why we need to take a long hard look at control of critical logistics needs once the current pandemic has eased...which they eventually all do.

N95 masks can protect you somewhat if worn correctly. Surgical masks don't do squat for the wearer, they are for keeping droplets and aerosols in.

Are you sure that’s not code for “I want a divorce?”

Executive order issued by the governor of Florida. Anyone flying down from the NYC area to self quarantine for 14 days. Aircraft to be met by law enforcement to collect information from pax and anyone found in violation can be charged with a misdemeanor.

This is gonna get interesting for Florida pilots...
