Can’t go home?

I go to work to fly planes to make money. Trip is nearing the end and the wife says do not think about coming home and getting the family sick. I’m not infected with the virus. Anyone else find themselves homeless now?

flyjbh 03-22-2020 08:43 AM

Nope... my wife needs my help and doesn’t watch the news all day

Here is an instructional video for your wife to watch before you come home...

I’m more concerned with a list of people who have tested positive in the company that we recently have flown with... (I know HIPPA Laws) I wonder if such list will surface or if the company will reach out to those who may have been in contact or operated the same flights as you. I know we have some crews who have tested positive.

THIS.......

SeriousShirley 03-22-2020 09:18 AM

She’s scared. It’s not rational, but frankly that doesn’t matter. Assure her you’ll do everything in your power to stay safe - wear a mask, wash your hands, strip in the garage, take a shower as soon as you’re home, whatever. Then get home, pull her away from social / news media, & help her calm down.

Broxis 03-22-2020 09:34 AM

Got some bad news about your wife.

...Jokes aside, just reassure her that youre doing everything you can to remain safe. Assure her that hundreds of other airline employees are in your boat but are still remaining safe, and that you value your family and are doing the same. That infection levels amongst your airline still remain low. That you are not worried about yourself but ARE worried about accidentaly infecting your family. That you are going everything possible to ensure shes safe. That you realize this is just a temporary low, and there will, eventually, be highs too.

If you need to, just call sick and see if she calms down 2 weeks from now. Its not worth the fight, just let it happen.

Since the start of the year there have been 14 million deaths worldwide. 14 thousand of those have been from coronavirus, mostly people in their sixties or older and mostly with significant preexisting illness(es).

People should take prudent steps to minimize risk for the sake of the public health of our parents and grandparents but they also need to stop scaring themselves to death.

While that may be likely, you can't actually know that. You could be asymptomatic fro up to 2 weeks.

I don’t get 2 weeks off. Under this rational I can never go home.

Correct. I'm not saying that you shouldn't go home, just point out that no one knows if they have it until its too late.

I know we have some who have been "diagnosed" positive, but have heard of none that have "tested" positive or even had the ability to receive the "test". Definitely lots of paranoia out there. The flu is still running rampant, I'm not sure how a doctor can even make a diagnosis, except in the extreme cases, without a test.

Whether it's the flu or covid19, you should be isolating yourself from other family members anyway. At the very least wear a mask, maybe even wear gloves. If the OP has immediate family members, as in living in his house who are at high risk, then isolate to a room.

As for the ultimatum, if she can't handle sane solutions, I'd run through the door and give her a big kiss. That way she can have a mild cold with you and the problem is solved. 😉

Do the powers that be really believe in the staying six feet away and no groups of 10+ limit? Airlines are still trying to fill up aluminum tubes.

Can't go to church because of health risks, but BWI-DEN round trip in the middle of the night makes perfect sense.

See if you are in a group of 9 people, your body’s immune system can ward off the Coronavirus, however if it senses that more people have joined your group—say 11, now then your body knows this and it’s Corona deflectors are reduced.

or if you don’t believe in that theory then maybe it’s perfectly fine to infect 8 other people with the virus but 12 would be unacceptable.

I’m someone that’s been classified as potentially having it. They ran 4 tests with that awful up the nose one being the true test. In my state it takes like 4-5 days to hear back. The other tests are a chest X-ray, of which you’ll see your lungs full of stuff which I have. Also you’ll get bloodwork done where they look at liver enzymes and white blood cells. I guess the virus effects those two things. After I got quarantined in the hospital I called my CP and he notified the last few people I flew with. I think that’s all they can do.

Avro85 03-22-2020 02:43 PM

More precise questions:

Why is ALPA not demanding that it's members follow CDC and Covid19 Task Force guidelines for the health and safety concerns?

If it's imperative health care workers have masks, why are Flight Attendants sent out to face the public unarmed?

Why are airline managements not being pressured by politicians to follow CDC and Covid19 Task Force measures while getting in line for taxpayer bailouts?

Sounds like you’re just the money bags to her... Sorry bro. Bet a Benjamin she has a side piece.

On another note, kids are don’t seem to get sick and not a single one has died below the age of 14 around the entire world from this. It’s impossible to shelter them 100% from it as it will be circulating for the next few years.

If that doesn’t work you may need to take a unpaid leave of absence and put the house on the market.

Sorry you have to deal with this on top of everything else.

I’d imagine it’s just that.. a rumor. If it really happened it’d be plastered all over the media.

Thanks everyone. It honestly just started off as just some sniffles. I thought it was allergies. I took some Zyrtec and it seemed to be okay. I then started to get the chills and some muscle aches with a low fever. It got worse and worse until it was kind of unbearable. It was like pins and needles types of chills for me. It hurt. After 8 days of feeling like death and having doctors say to just stay isolated I then developed a cough. It got hard to breathe fully and on day 11 of feeling terrible I drove myself to the ER. Got admitted to the hospital that day and been stuck here ever since. The cough happened fast. It was like 30 hours. No one I’ve knowingly come in contact with has the virus, nor are the last few I’ve flown with showing any signs of being sick. Must have been in passing somewhere. Stay safe out there y’all.

Tell her to go stay at her moms or something to that effect. Don't put up with that.

squawkoff 03-22-2020 06:36 PM

I can’t see the logic (if there is any) in restricting people from gathering in numbers greater than 10 or more (some states vary) but then allow 145 people to be placed shoulder to shoulder for 2 or more hours and breath recycled air in an airplane. Am I missing something?

Qotsaautopilot 03-22-2020 06:47 PM

Asymptomatic FA hands you something from the galley like a bottle of water. You don’t sterilize the bottle or your hands and you can get it’s that way.

Or literally billions of other ways. That’s the thing, people spreading it when they don’t even know they have it. I’d bet the infected is closer to a million or more. We only know those that have been tested

van driver grabbing your bags

Tsa touching your ID.

hotel tv remote.

Fellow pilot dialing FCU.

cockpit seat adjustments

seatbelt buckle or the belt itself

I’m wiping everything anyone else has touched best I can. Then when I get to the hotel my bag handles and everything in my pockets gets Clorox wipe along with the door handles light switches and surfaces I place my things on.

When I get home same procedure plus bag gets a Lysol spray. Shoes have never come inside anyway bc that’s just gross. Then I go wash my hands and face at a minimum before seeing anyone. Hard to tell my kids to not hug me when I come in the door.

If one has it pretty hard to not pass it to your immediate family with our close contact. I can try and prevent it hitchhiking in on my belongings. Also knowing we are at much higher risk of being carriers bc of my job we are actually doing our part and taking the distancing seriously. Getting calls for play dates and family hangouts but keep saying no because I don’t want to unknowingly give it to someone that either gets very ill or infects their family member that gets very or deathly ill. I could easily drink some beers with a neighbor in the front yard but the dang kids don’t know what 6 ft means.

I'm planning on catching it if the show keeps rolling on like this. It's pretty much inevitable.

dude. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face. Wash your hands. No way to effectively disinfect every possible surface while on a 4-day. Hell, I see this behavior with the “germaphobes” even without a pandemic. Did I mention wash your hands?
