OAK layover (be careful)

Be careful on your OAK layover. Lots of crime lately.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/elderly-a...000310594.html

funny they didn’t mention the race of the suspects. I thought that was the standard these days.

flyjbh 07-16-2021 06:38 PM

I have been careful on every OAK overnight. That place is a **** hole

report must be wrong

The reporting must be wrong. They said one of the assailants had a gun with an extended magazine. Everyone knows California doesn't allow guns or extended magazines.

BeechedJet 07-17-2021 02:27 AM

Hey guys be careful on any overnight in any city, there’s scary crime out there. Ask the van driver to take you to the closest Miller’s Ale house even if it’s a short walk. You don’t even have to tip a dollar since you have no bags for them to touch.

BeechedJet 07-17-2021 02:50 AM

What’s the point of a thread like this. Random crime story and trying to tie it into an airline forum and immediately trying to get people thinking about race. Good job dude, you really hit it out of the ball park on this one.

Haha. When you’re right, you’re right.

Maybe I’ll do a thread on how it rains every day in FLL or walking around the LGA short at night isn’t a good idea either.

There are like 5 users here that make it their full time jobs to derail threads and make it miserable here  if you think this is bad, you should see their Facebook walls:eek:

More Bay Area overnights for the rest of us. I enjoy them. Great beer spots.

Weird flex... but sure you can have them!

TrojanCMH 07-19-2021 05:21 AM

I really don’t mind the long OAK overnight. Not one of the best by any means though. But the hotel is recently remodeled and comfortable. If you turn right and head towards the bay it isn’t as bad as going towards the government buildings. I’d be open to moving to Berkeley though.

Then we can compare which city smells more like urine

Why don’t you just avoid it if you hate NorCal so much?

Downtown OAK is a total shytehole. We moved out of there due to the rapidly deteriorating situation. Hard to find a good area to stay in in the Bay Area these days. Crime and vagrancy has taken over.

Born and raised there. Gives me the right to say whatever I please about my hometown.

Cities smelling of urine are fact. Difference is I’ve lived there long enough to remember when it was not as bad as it is now.

Stomper 07-19-2021 10:37 AM

The S.F. Bay area which includes Oakland is an absolute gem of an American city. From the long stay hotel it’s a quick train ride over to the Embarcadero for a walk along the waterfront to Fisherman’s Wharf then uphill to the curviest road Lombard Street with numerous local food options on many street corners.
I’ve never felt unsafe in OAK. I’ve actually never felt unsafe on any of our layovers and I always walk around the areas where we stay.
Is there crime in America? Yes. Are there problems with homelessness? Yes. Could state, local and federal government agencies as well as the private sector in the Bay Area that has so much wealth do a better job of solving issues? Yes. But do those issues prevent me from enjoying our amazing American cities? No.
Take some basic precautions by not carrying a lot of cash or wearing your Rolex while out walking and explore our great layover cities.

And one more thing; avoid commenting on any threads started by Halon. He craves the attention but he’s really just a troll.

Fair enough. Just don’t get all the hate as an overnight. It’s not our best but certainly not our worst.

I don’t dislike the overnight. The Oakland short is in a way more dangerous location than the long. Always amazed when I would hear of FAs walking around the OAK short at night. I like the long because it’s easy access to the City

Same here. That’s all I was trying to convey.

couldn't *possibly* have anything to do with the fact the local DA has publicly stated no thefts of less than $1000 will be prosecuted, could it?!?

Headed there next week? Can i walk outside the hotel? Should I wear a mask?

It’s California so they might require you to wear a mask while you sleep in your room.

if you decide to walk outside and get in trouble, forget police assistance. Have the number for “Citezens De-escalations Services” handy instead.

This entire thread seems pointless. All crew should be exercising caution on every overnight. Whether it be LGA, OAK, ORD, LAS, BNA, or hell even DEN...

49 U.S. Code § 44921 - Federal flight deck officer program

(f)Authority To Carry Firearms.—
(2)Preemption.—
Notwithstanding any other provision of Federal or State law, a Federal flight deck officer, whenever necessary to participate in the program, may carry a firearm in any State and from 1 State to another State.

I mean, you can’t leave the damn thing in the hotel room. Any maid coming to provide fresh towels might find it…

That's true. You can take the damn thing with you, and keep it locked in the damn non descript bag.

I don't care what ridiculous hypothetical they ask you in the interview, I pity the fool who carries that federally issued weapon outside the cockpit and actually tries to use it. In California none the less, the most anti gun of the anti gun states! You won't be going to white collar prison, you'll be going to federal pound me in the ass prison. Especially with the anti gun socialists we have in charge right now. FAFO.

nck4857 07-23-2021 07:01 AM

Hey look forward to the bright side, only in Oakland can you attend your first Side Show, complete with gun blasts at the end and no law enforcement whatsoever!

Highly recommended for a nice family outing!

A FIDO used his federally issued firearm to protect his family during an attempted home invasion, in California. No charges were brought against him.

Now strappin your heater while you stroll the streets of <insert layover city here>? That’s a different story… your results will likely vary. Wildly.

TrojanCMH 07-25-2021 09:11 AM

Walk over to Lake Merritt and have a drink at Lake Chalet. The lake is almost a perfect 5k if you’re into running outside. Lots of gentrification going on. Lots of restaurants and bars on Broadway in the Lake Merritt district, if you don’t feel like walking the 15 minutes go down to Jack London square and sit outside and have a beer at one of the breweries or go have an overpriced hipster pizza at Forge and watch the boats come and go. If you’re into legit dive bars goto Merchant Saloon. Opens at 7 am. Uptown Oakland is also worth a look.

Or just stay in your room and complain about all the scary homeless people and how bad of a state California is.

Go and do the Billie Bean Moneyball tour at the Oakland Coliseum. Buy a rap CD, an Oaklandish hat, and a churro on the way in from BART. Then take your seat and take in the sights and sounds from an old stadium not worth the dynamite it would take to level it to the ground. See the great new players and be thankful you got to see America's #1 farm team for the Yankees in real life. Go check out the urine troughs in the bathroom and watch your step! When it's over, make sure you exit the game quickly because it will be seagull poop city in a matter of 5 minutes. On the way out grab a shirt from the guy who sold you the hat that says "everything I known about stealing I learned in Oakland." You'll look like a true local at that point.

When you're back at work,, tell other guy all about your day and how with just a few more tax dollars,, they could really clean up that stadium ;)

CAirBear 07-25-2021 03:00 PM

Glad to see it back. Have a number of long OAK coming up. Have a cousin in SF. BART right across the street, 3 stops. Perfect.
