After being fired from PayPal Elon formed SpaceX and hired some aersopace engineers. No doubt that SpaceX has accomplished some really cool **** that Boeing can't even manage. Musk was not a original founder of the company but was certainly the heart and sole of the company and the reason behind its success. The original founders were no longer involved when Tesla was on death watch and not expected to survive. The products that saved Tesla were all post Musk involvement in the company and the funding to develope those products either came from or were sourced by Musk.
