Such a sad day. My heart felt condolences to all the Spirit employees. Spirit was always extremely hospitable to me when I would commute on them. Every employee I interacted with were class acts and I hope you all find a great new company to work for. I know we are hiring, and hope to work with many of you soon

There are a lot of things being said right now, and it’d be good if we can all make sure verifiable, credible information is being shared.

Thanks

came from an internal contact. Journal is confirming it as well

Not to be overly dramatic but anyone reading this who feels desperate and is considering doing something rash just know that in a few years you could very well look back on this and see it as a net positive. I’ve seen it a few times in life when a sudden event causes someone to look for options in places they never would have looked otherwise and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Hang in there and reach out if needed.

Air Stang 7 05-01-2026 08:07 PM

I'm so sorry for all of you.
Thanks for the many commutes and leisure trips. You guys and gals took such good care of OAL jumpseaters on all sides. Quite a few times the gate agents would have a the form already filled out that I only needed to sign and be given a great seat right away, check in to a cool crew and the FAs went out of their way to take care of us. I hope everyone ends up in a good place.

SoFloFlyer 05-01-2026 08:30 PM

I’m so sorry guys. My heart goes out to yall. Always treated me well before, during, and after my time there. Truly appreciate yall.

Try not to take this on yourself. Seek support/friend. This too shall pass.

MCDUmanipulator 05-01-2026 08:30 PM

Has anyone heard anything internally yet? Pretty crappy to make your employees have to hear everything from the media.

Truly best of wishes to all of the pilots at Spirit.

How many pilots are on the list right now? Curious to try to calculate how fast they will all get picked up.

I was wondering if those guys knew they were the last flight in the air.

They asked tower if they were the last NK flight in the air. DFW tower confirmed it.

Rode Spirit a bunch and hope for soft landings for everyone. Be safe out there

Delta757 05-01-2026 09:33 PM

I've always noticed how friendly Spirit employees were. Probably the friendliest airline employees I've interacted with. With all of the hiring going on in the industry, I hope you all get a new home soon. Sorry you all have to go through this....

Not a peep from ALPA. Best 2% you never spent. Shameful.

They don't do sensationalism or clickbait, they use reliable sources, and they don't go off half-cocked. The subscription fee is $500/year and it's worth it.

I would suggest Ground News. They have an app and they will show you all the different news source on a topic. They show who's bias and unbias and factuality score on the news source.

I know it doesn't get said. It's obvious now that all those that left did the right thing.

It took more courage to leave than stay IMO. Bravo to you.

Couldn’t reply to 69fastback and skigambia on the last now closed thread so I’ll do it here! You guys need to get your heads checked. This is a terrible time for all of us and we all should be sympathetic yet vigilant. You two losers need to get real

For all you youngins, welcome to the industry. Many have been furloughed, fired, or employer folded before you and many more will. That is capitalism at its essence.

The good news is Spirit is folding during an incredible hiring spurt by the remaining airlines, so you'll all land on your feet and in a few years may grow to love your new circumstance even better.

Imagine being furloughed into an industry where EVERYONE is furloughing, airlines were folding, oil was REALLY spiking (I remember reading a industry newsletter where they proclaimed that "peak oil" had been obtained where the price was gonna rise to over $300/barrel by the end of the decade) and most existing airlines were parking 3pilot domestic planes in favor of 2 pilot ones ie the 2000's.

Yes. Very sorry this happened but there is a bright spot and it's basically mass legacy retirements. Even if you don't to another 121, that demand signal for experienced pilots will create opportunities in other aviation sectors. Some of those will want you to start on Monday, not go in a pool and wait for background checks and class dates.

As a new pilot weeks after 9/11 I remember being told by an old hand that I wouldn't be able to get a job with 30,000 hours and type rating on the space shuttle. This is not that.

nothing quite like a tragedy to bring out the “you think you’ve got it bad” crowd…

When I was young I was furloughed uphill, in the rain, both ways. That made me the tone deaf idiot I am now.

Tayo826 05-02-2026 08:25 AM

Contrary to what a now-locked thread said, Scott Kirby was (unfortunately) right.

Tinpusher007 05-02-2026 08:28 AM

So sorry for the way things have turned out for all of you at Spirit. This industry can unfortunately be very brutal at times. I wish you all the very best in your future endeavors. Thank you all for your service to the profession. Blue skies ahead and tailwinds behind you!!!

Not terribly surprising. Regardless of what you think of his dress code, he is a competent manager who's very familiar with the industry. He had more credibility than the various con artists and shysters involved in NK's finances and future.

First: Spirit Airlines shutting down is not a “tragedy”. It is capitalism correcting the market. You either offer a product people wantt or you perish, been that way largely for 250yrs in the us.

it’s about perspective. Wallowing in what was, does not help. Even when times were bleak it’s important to see this as an opportunity for something even potentially better.

Those who like to just sit and complain about mgmt, the govt, and even other pilots generally haven’t done enough to help themselves which is far more rewarding in life.

yes some of us are older and more experienced on the industry and have been in the exact position thousands of pilots find themselves in currently, but if you take control of your own destiny, you can often turn lemons into lemonaid even if by accident.

He is not wrong though, anyone left at Spirit that did not bounce in the last few years, was very foolish. It's not like this mess happened overnight.
