Possibly more importantly, CRAFT is the standard teaching method for Air Traffic Controllers who are handing out your clearance--at least when I went through the ATC schoolhouse. Another teaching standard for ATC that most pilots don't realize (especially students) is the PTAC given prior to an approach clearance -- P-Position (6 miles from Ashley) T-Turn (turn left/right hdg xxx), A-Altitude (maintain 1,600 until the marker), C-Clearance (Cleared ILS rwy 15 approach). If you happen to be established on final already and don't need a turn then they just "PAC" you!

Why use CRAFT or CRADS or anything else? Why not just copy what you hear? As long as you've got some SA on where you are, where your planned route takes you, and where you're going, it's easy. One technique I do use: for departure instructions, rather than writing that part verbatim, I draw "pictures" like the missed approach instructions on approach plates.

Because when you are learning, it helps to know what is coming. Think back to when you were a student learning to deal with ATC. Your instructor could tell you exactly what the controller was about to say and what to tell him, but when your callsign was up, you would still miss something. Now imagine trying to deal with the clearance and having no idea what to expect!

Also work on some short hand that you understand. For example:

ROA AF 5k 390/10 125.8 5642 is what I write for:

"N1234, cleared to the Roanoke airport as filed, maintain five thousand, expect Flight Level three-niner-zero in one-zero minutes. Departure frequency 125.8, squawk 5642."

Or:

PIA V--> J6 - ALB AF H235/7k 400/10 126.9 5630

"N1234, cleared to the Peoria airport, radar vectors to Jet 6, Albany, as filed. After departure fly heading 235, maintain seven thousand, expect flight level four-zero-zero in one-zero minutes. Departure frequency 126.9, squawk 5630."

Here's some of the short hand you can use:

D-> Direct
V-> Vectors
H123 Heading
-> Right
<- Left
AF As filed

I second this.

CRAFT may be from riddle but that doesnt mean its right !

I use DRAFT. D=Destination R=Routing A=Alititude F=Frequency T=Transponder. I like the PTAC and I guess I'll add RVR onto the end of DRAFT. I also like WVSTAR for whats on ATIS. W=Winds V=Visibility S=Sky Condition T=Temperature A=Altimeter R=Remarks. Good discussion.
