Default Atc related question

Hello,

I'm a first time poster and I'm not quite sure if this is the right sub forum to ask this in.
This question specifically has to do with atc assigned speeds within 20 miles of a landing runway.
If a controller phrases a speed control instruction at 15 mile final as "cleared visual approach runway 36, reduce speed to 170" without specifying that 170k must be maintained until either the faf or a 5 mile final...... When would commercial pilots typically start slowing below 170k to set up for final approach speed? And is there in any ambiguity on when to start pulling your speed back because no specific point has been provided to keep 170k to?

Thank you

Ultimately, it’s up to the pilot to make sure he/she meets stabilized approach criteria. Whatever that means for your aircraft/operation. Just do the best you can.

Other than that you can ask for clarification.

Without specifics from ATC, I still stick with their common requests of the outer marker or 5NM final, whichever is best (assuming they are not co-located) with respect to any traffic that may be ahead. Also, if I know I'm following a slower aircraft, I slow earlier than perhaps the controller wanted. It's not my fault the controller didn't put a speed restriction point in place and I'm not going to increase the odds of an unstabilized approach if they don't.

That all makes perfect sense. Really appreciate the feedback. I just wanted to run it here and make sure there wasn't something I was missing (eg in the AIM about some pre agreed upon slowdown point to final speed between pilots and atc).

Thanks
