Default Question for 717 drivers

A friend of mine was saying that on the 717 you have to look through a system of mirrors to view the compass. Is this correct? The only reason that I can think of to explain why that is would be so that the compass is further from electronics that can cause innacurate indications. But then aircraft like the 737 have it right up front on the bottom of the overhead.

It's a holdover from its DC-9 origins. I think they built it that way simply because there was no room left on the main panel.

I'm sure one of the many -9 vets on here knows for sure.

I'm an MD88 guy, but I was told they had to move the compass back there because of electromagnetic interference.

And yes, you look through a little pop-up vanity minor on the glare shield that looks over the FO's shoulder into a lit compartment in the ceiling that houses the compass.

Other times the mirror is used in conjunction with the Flight Director switch to remind one of the crossfeed being open...

DC-8 had the same system.

Rube Goldberg has nothing on the Douglas Long Beach engineers ;-)

The whole plane (DC9/MD8x/MD9x/717) is filled with stuff you just couldn't make up.
It's quirky, but it's an honest plane...

...like a bipolar alcoholic girlfriend

Remember too that the numbers to be viewed in a mirror had to be reversed. The device for opening the cockpit window looks and operates like something off the DC-3

You know - you didn't have this sort of crap on a Lockheed or Boeing airplane. As the old truism states:

Lockheed should design them,
Boeing should build them,
Douglas should market them...

Douglas - manufactured in Long Beach, engineered in the field...

My favorite:

Boeing builds airplanes
Douglas builds character
