While the difference is only 48 degrees b/t 88 and 136, if you add the additional 30+ degrees of right turn you need to crab into that x-wind, you'll get around an 80 degree turn.

Now, overshoot it by a couple degrees after thinking that 'I don't need to start the turn THAT early', and, there you go, 85 degrees.

Alaska has always had lots of approaches/departures that I considered "difficult" for many reasons: weather, terrain, approach (or lack of), poor runway, poor or no lighting. Often all of those factors. Even the airports with flat terrain could be dangerous for various reasons. I think conditions have improved vastly all over the state in the last couple of decades, thanks to improved resources and technology.

Here's some current notes from one old favorite, Cape Romanzof (PACZ):

RWY LCTD ON SIDE OF 2100' MTN; APCH FM SW LND RWY 02 ONLY; TKOF RWY 20 ONLY; HIGH TERRAIN BOTH SIDES & N END RWY; SUCCESSFUL GO-AROUND IMPROBABLE.
- CAUTION; WNDS IN EXCESS OF 20 KTS MAY PRODUCE SEVERE TURBULANCE.
- BE ALERT: SHARP DROP OFF WEST SIDE OF RY. RESTRICT 180 DEG TURNS TO N END OF RY, AT APRON AREA
- DUE TO TERRAIN; WINDS FROM 070-150 DEG (MAG) MAY BE STRONGER THAN REPORTED WINDS.
- DAYLGT OPNS ONLY.
- BE ALERT: POSSIBLY LARGE NRS OF 'GLAUCOUS GULLS' MAY BE PRESENT IN THE AREA OF CAPE ROMANZOF LRRS AIRFIELD DURING EARLY TO MID JUNE. ALSO CANADA GEESE, & TUNDRA SWANS DURING MID AUG TO EARLY SEP.
- DURING LCL COMMERCIAL & SUBSISTENCE HERRING FISHERY ACTIVITIES, GULLS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN HIGH NRS (500-1000) ON THE BEACH BLO THE APCH TO THE RY.
- THE INCRD BIRD & GULL ACTIVITY IS IN ADDITION TO THE BIRD ACTIVITIES IN THE RISK ANALYSIS OF WILDLIFE HAZARDS TO ACFT AT CAPE ROMANZOF. DILIGENCE BY ALL PERSONNEL IS RECOMMENDED THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.
Cape Newenham is always fun also, with an 8.9% runway grade. Full power just to taxi.

I scared the chit out of myself departing KTEX on winter afternoon and I will never go back into that place again.

I have been into ASE many times but never IFR. One of my last recurrents was with an old Air Wisconsin pilot who was very familiar with ASE and gave me a few good tips. Still wouldnt do it IFR.

as for me a tough approach is UIO, Quito Airport. After 14 hrs of block time finishing there at night under minimums, rain and poor braking and heavy weights...
I also get to see MD-11s from LH cargo doing visual approaches to rwy 17 from time to time
