Quite common in the 121 world. Anytime they shut down the flow into a major hub you could get the "Hold over present position, standard turns, 10 NM legs." Many times flying into IAH from the south or when a storm sits on ORD.

your scenario...never seen it but of course nothing is impossible. But did I say, "never seen it" ?

simple answer - ask ATC specifically what they want.
True, but I still am asked to hold at least twice a year. But we do have quite a few storms here in Texas.

I had this situation 2 days ago, SWA holding on STAR (published hold) and gave them a clearance "cleared to RDU via depart holding via last routing cleared, maintain XXXX."
