Why does the Airbus STOP on the runway?

I've noticed a number of Airbus (cargo and passenger) that will literally come to a complete stop on the runway after landing.

During busy pushes, this can really lead to some excitement in the Tower. The Local and Ground Controllers are often coordinating with each other to have a landing aircraft follow a taxiing aircraft at a specific intersection; there might be another landing aircraft on short final or the Tower Controller might have an aircraft slotted for immediate takeoff.

When an aircraft comes to a complete stop on the runway, we are wonding what is happening out there. The aircraft then comes up on the power and slowly inches off the runway -- while the Local Controller sits poised with his thumb on the mike button waiting for the "GO AROUND!" or "CLEARED FOR IMMEDIATE TAKEOFF!" command to be transmitted.

Can someone shed some light on the subject? It's always an Airbus.

I flew it for 9 years with FEDEX and didn't do anything different than in every other airplane.....I don't know what you saw, but it should be doing the same as every other airplane...

Freightbird 12-12-2006 08:51 AM

The max taxi speed for a 90 degree turn is 10 kts. It may look like a stop, but it not required.

You fly a SF340 and claim an A310 is underpowered? I have about waaaay more than enough SF340 time to know that if anything is underpowered, it's the 'SLOB'-340. :D The only time I've seen an A310 act like a SF340 is on a 120+ degree day fully bagged out in DXB - and then it still performs reasonably well.

My guess to the answer of the original question is also the 10kt limitation for 90 degree turns - it probably looks like a full stop but it really isn't.

AVIVIII 12-12-2006 09:48 AM

ummmm, he said underbuilt

I did it once in LGA, but at the last second, remembered to push the pedals, so didn't come to a complete stop, but close enough to make the Captain, and I am sure the contoller, a little "puckered".

Here! I did it for you. And I didn't type everything out. *copy-and-paste*:D

Excellent observation devoid of any facts such as the engines and systems are mostly US made and the airplane have components which make it about 50/50 on origin of components. And too... the fact that the Boeings (such as the 777) are contructed from components around the world.

Jetjok 12-12-2006 11:25 AM

The Airbus 300-600 is a great jet. The A-310 a little less so. If the autobrake selection is in Max, the jet stops so quickly that it might actually come to a complete stop before the autobrakes are released by the crew. The first time I had a landing with Max selected, it stopped so quickly, I didn't even have time to deploy the reversers. It's an eye opening experience.

As a side issue, ECAM is way better than any alert driven system (that Boeing makes), because the jet at all times knows what problems it has and presents, in plain english, the correct checklist as well as the schematic of the system involved, so that when you press a tile and move a valve, you can actually see that valve move. Very cool and very smart. You've gotta remember that these Airbuses were built for 3rd world nations to fly. So a guy could actually park his camel (as an example), and climb into and fly an airbus. The Boeing and MD products all require much more system knowledge, which can be a good thing, or a very bad thing at 3 AM after having flown all night.

And the tail has never fallen off the SAAB yet. Maybe it's just me.. I kinda like when the tail stays intact with the rest of the fuselage, make the plane much easier to fly

Uh, Jetjok... I think you mean to say land with Medium autobrakes, right? If you landed with Max, we would have ALL heard about it on another forum.;)

KiloAlpha 12-12-2006 01:18 PM

And you're how old?? I should hope you're making some money finally.

I have to be less than half your age old man.. maybe all that Viagra is going to your head.

Yeah, sorry. It's been about 5 years since I flew the Airbus. On the MD-11 we can use Max for landing. It's really quite exciting. Must have meant Medium. I'd forgotten that on the Airbus, Maximum is only for RTO's. Thanks.

What a crock. The Saab I used as an airport car had the tail fall off once. Cost me $37 to get it fixed. You'd be much better off flying one of them new Volvos. And I hear it pays better... almost $15/hr.

Yet another unfounded outspoken statement. Racking them up

KiloAlpha 12-12-2006 02:38 PM

Unfounded? have you been living in a hole?

The tail literally came off an American A300 in flight. All that was left were the mounting bolts.

Mark, I'm wondering if you are really a pilot or you play with Flight Sim all day? I can't believe you are acting this way over an Airbus comment. I would have expected this on that other forum with pictures but not here. Can't we all just get along?

It's great how a 40 something guy got involved in a "my airplane is better than yours" debate. What a tool.

Glad that a 37 year old with your maturity is flying the blender I bought my grandmother for christmas around and not my family.

Calm down. These peeing matches are getting old for those of us who have learned to stay out of them.

Tony, what about dog years? Mark is a freight dawg and Kilo is not. I'm too tired to do the math but add in the 7 year to every one equation for dog years. Your better than "the great big book of everything" I really enjoy your knowledgable posts.

Hey hey hey there.... I'm going to regionals (hopefully). Lets show a little bit of respect. It's part of the stepping stone process to gain seniority so we can THEN beat down on the little people. But don't do that till I'm no longer a little people. Then bash away!

Great... You found one. You can find a few on Boeing, MD, Lockheed, ect. You've never touched one. You did however giveup a higher paying jet job for a lower paying SAAB340 job...

Let me show you a little math that should have made your decision easier.

3yrs at Colgan Air= total income of $92,700 based on upgrade time found on APC. You would be a captain at Colgan for 2 years with no jet experience.

3yrs at ExpressJet= Total income of $99,000 or $105,300 based on which aircraft you become captain in. You would be a captain for 1 year.

ExpressJet would pay you an average of $2,100 or $4,200 more per year and you'd have jet experience. Why you had a job offer at Express and dropped it for Colgan is beyond me. That's if you really were offered one

I only point this out because after reading your several post I've come to the conclusion that you think far less than I do, which is seriously saying something. Perhaps before just tossing out this big crazy rant or smart remark to anyone justification should be included. You say airbus sucks yet have no knowledge on them. Now think for a minute.... If CaptainMark said they suck, having flown them, I'll buy it. But I'm not going to listen to a guy who makes some seriously bad choices. I'm a Boeing fan because it's american, keeps jobs in the US, and they are proven.

That being said... I'll make a $10 paypal wager we see Kilo at Go-Jets, Mesa, or something close.
