EDIT: I see I'm behind the curve here as it was announced long ago. Guess I just didn't pay enough attention. 220 pax in a 73??? Wow.

Chicago-based Boeing BA released its newest jetliner, the Boeing 737 MAX 9. The MAX 9 jet was rolled out Tuesday at Boeing’s Renton final assembly plant. If the MAX 9 is launched, it will fully enter service in 2020.
With over 3,600 orders already placed in the MAX family, Boeing says that the MAX 9, compared to its younger sibling, the MAX 8, has been designed for better fuel efficiency and decreased costs. The new jet can carry 220 passengers and fly 3,515 miles nonstop, making it available for a flight from New York to London.
The 737 series is most used for short to medium duration flights and competes with Airbus’ EADSY A321neo. Airbus has the upper hand in this class of jet performance as their A321neo seats more passengers and flies a farther distance than the MAX 9. With the 3,600 MAX jets ordered, only 220 have been the MAX 9, which has kept industry leaders doubtful.

Yes, Sunvox, we've heard of the 737-9 Max considering UA has firm orders for 100.

Too bad the 739-9 is a marketplace dud.
Airbus is outselling it with the A321Neo by 5:1. Take away UAL's large 737-9 order and it's 10:1.
Meanwhile, the 737-8 and A320Neo are much better matched in performance and sales.
Simply put, the 737 has been stretched beyond its envelope. It will be interesting too see if UA's order survives the current fleet review. Thus, I'm gonna suspect that Boeing will be quite aggressive in retaining UA's order as without it the whole -9 program is questionable.

Timing will be critical. 737-10's or 321neo's? It will greatly depend on the fleet review and when UAL wants to replace our remaining 757's.
Then again, when Boeing started the -9, it was going to be the last stretch. Now, the-10 is really going to be the last....it desperately needs a new wing.

My bet would be that since the -9 isn't really capable of replacing the 757, and the timing is better, that our -9 orders will be converted to the -10's. Boeing is just now working on the -10, and is pushing pretty hard. They are way late to the party. Since they are still working on specs, it's not a sure thing that is will have trans-Atlantic capability. Saying the -9 can to London, is a bit of a stretch. Yes, it could do London, but not with much in it.

Should've stopped at the 737-800.

With the other thread, the new middle market plane, I agree. The -10 is doomed. They need to stop spending money on it ASAP. I know they screwed the pooch by not having a 321neo competitor, but they need to figure if they want to spend that money on the -10 in a vain attempt to have an alternative to the 321neo, (which will go away with the 797,) or just spend the money on the 797 program.

You can blame the 737 madness on all the idiot executives from McDonnell Douglas. Boeing kept them during the merger because they did such a great job of running MD into the ground with poor performing derivatives that didn't answer the market needs. A large contingent at Boeing was pushing for a blank sheet airplane to replace the 737NG but was overridden by the MD morons who were risk adverse.
