Default Non-Telephone Reserve Ideas

Have any of you more adventurous types been able to work reserve while out in the wild? I like to hike and fish but even a few miles out of town I run into cell-service issues. I've been trying to find some way around phone coverage but for reserve assignments I need to either have wifi/data to aggressive pickup assignments or have a voice connection to acknowledge short-call (no digital way).

This isn't a complaint about reserve, I actually like sitting long-call and getting paid to fish and fix up my 'palace' although if I don;t get out a bit more my wife may have to kick me out!!

My waistline and sanity thank you in advance!

All options considered! Satphone, PLB, etc etc

Yeah, funny as it may sound... the Sat phone thing really has crossed my mind.

Picking up SC selectively helps too.

I like waking up at plopping a SC bid in then getting a text at 11:03 with the confirmation. The only issue is when they build the SC late.

All the Satphone minutes expire after ~30 days so basically you need to spend around $500 a year for the basic access plans. The new two-way sat-PLB-things allow certain texting feature, but I don't think scheduling would appreciate my wife or brother calling them to confirm an assignment!

At my old airline, and I think you know which one I'm talking about, I would simply call skeds and tell them that I'd be out of cell phone range for a bit. "Please just add any trip (that I line up for) on my line and I will call you back and acknowledge it at X o'clock". Never had an issue and never missed a trip.

Although it's a blast from the past, pagers are still a thing. Work on different frequency and may have a greater reach due to "simulcasting."

Of course, you still have to call in to get the message, but at least you know they called!

I'd like to see something resembling a Twitter feed set up where you can text your commute status rather than calling in to the Crew Desk.

For example, if I have to scramble for my backup commute flight I could post a text with my U number, Flight #, and arrival time. That way if Crew Desk calls and I don't pick up, they could leave their messages and then search the feed for my U number to see if I've posted my status recently.

This would also be very useful for commuting in during a long call or if still airborne inbound after a short call window opens. Would save a lot of time on the phone for both pilots and Crew Scheds.

Probably my only complaint with RSV contract language here. There really isn't any mechanism for you to go home from an assignment if you commute. You're on call right away. I haven't commuted, and I know people do this, but is it codified?

Google voice and buy the internet. I had a gogo plan just for this reason (used American Airlines for my commute). I would text my wife if it was Short call/Field standby and she would call in and acknowledge.
