Default Mayday...no notams?

Recently a plane declared an emergency due to not having notams at the unplanned diversion airport. Maybe this is just me, but why not just ask for notams from dispatch/atc and continue. Why jam everyone up with your "emergency"?

Before you say it, yes there was time to get them, and yes ATC offered. Anyways maybe Im missing something.

CYA maybe? Can't get in trouble for violating a notam if you are an emergency aircraft. All though not a very good one, it's the only excuse I can think of.

How does my emergency jam you up? Genuinely curious what you mean by that.

Also, I only ever worry about one plane because I can only ever fly one plane. Common courtesy is one thing, but saying "I'm not going to declare because I don't want to inconvenience someone..." I think that's unproductive.

All that said: get the NOTAMS from dispatch and press on.

I too only worry about one plane. Also not saying you wouldn't declare because of the effect of your action on another plane. Who cares...I have the emergency. The issue is, is this an emergency? I do not believe it is. As you pointed out just get the notams.

Your emergency does effect other aircraft. My point is that other aircraft have to be resequenced and most likely delayed to allow priority to be given to the emergency aircraft. If you declare for notams or a cold crew meal it will cause others to have to be resequenced, burn more fuel, etc etc.

Well, if you are diverting to a major international airport and you declare an emergency for lack of NOTAMs, your "emergency" is jamming everyone up. Emergency authority is an important tool, don't be the boy who called wolf.

Pilot inexperience is likely a factor.

It may have been an emergency for him today, but in the future I would wager he learned from it and that would not be an emergency in future diverts.

Again, if I declare an emergency, I don't care about delays caused for others.

I think the point is that the emergency may have been self-induced.
If you're invoking 91.3 because you didn't follow 91.103...

But that doesn't seem to be the case in the OP. "Unplanned diversion airport"
