Default PBS Question

What exactly does AWARD WORK L-- vs H++ do if you are only bidding 3 lines. Ex 1) AVOID ALL NIGHTERS 2) AVOID BWI 3) AWARD WORK L--?

Basically, I got 6 trips this month (2 and 3 days) for 71 hours. Last year around this time I got 4 easy 3 day trips. Does the L-- or H++ correlate to being awarding more vs less work?

Thanks. Hope that question made sense. Basically I want to work less than the high time lines I've been getting *this month aside)

The most basic answer to your second paragraph is Yes. H++ means give me as MANY of these trips as possible, L-- means use as few of these trips as possible. If you don't like working 6 days straight you need use a set max work block length of something less than 6.

Also because the way H++ says give as many trips as possible if you have a range of trips from 1-4 days it will give you shorter length trips to fit more trips into your schedule. When using H++ it's a good idea to use SETS or limit the number of trips within the preference selection it can give if you have a lot trips in that pool.

All the AWARD and AVOID commands do is to distribute trips to the pools ([L--] though [H++]). The solver builds a lines using the trips from the pools.

All that matters is what pools the trips are in after the last AWARD statement. It doesn't make any difference HOW the trips got into those pools.

All trips in a single pool are weighted identically so considered equal to the solver. If you prefer one trip, or type of trip, over another then it needs to be in a higher pool.

If you don't want two day trips, then they should be frozen lower (sooner) in your bid group..

Something like this :
Set "something"
Set "something else"
Award work L--
Avoid trip <3 days
Award work L-
Avoid trip depart from BWI
Award work L
Avoid trip depart DCA
Award work N

This will freeze all the two day trips at the lowest level. When you click on the sort at the bottom of that bid group, you should see all the two day trips sorted into L--, then all the 3 and 4 day trips out of BWI in the L- bucket, all the 3 / 4 day DCA trips in the L bucket, and all the 3 / 4 day IAD trips in the Neutral bucket. The sequence of your award and avoid statements is significant and will impact what bucket the trips are in.
