Default Vacation and Mil Leave

I'm on mil leave, and I get back in about 8 months. I tried to look in the contract, but couldn't find it...does anyone know if I can bid for vacation since I will be back before the next vacation bid cycle? Thanks.

Not sure... but if I recall properly I was given prorated vacation when I returned mid year... then bid during monthly vacation bidding. I’d call/email pilot hiring dept or email the ALPA UAL military committee.

You can bid for vacation. You can also choose not to bid. The company will randomly assign your maximum vacation days... Upon your return, and within 30 days, you may cancel the awarded vacation and either bid monthly vacation or request your assigned dates be moved to any date that was awarded to a junior pilot.

Ref: MOU 24 (page 637 of the UPA)

I emailed the company and had mine moved. Worked like a champ.

You can absolutely bid for vacation.

You can reference the vacation award announcement on Flying Together to shop for your desired dates.

I emailed the company and got my vacation moved. Worked like a champ.

There is a MOU 24 at end of the contract called Military Pilot Vacation. It’s a confusing read so I’ll sum it up from my experience coming off 7 month deployment a little bit ago. If you don’t submit any bids, when you return to active status you have to contact United (start at CPO or PSC) IOT cancel any auto-awarded vacation and then select the weeks you want. You will ONLY be able to select a week that someone junior to you received.

The assumption and default position is that, while deployed, you don’t have either the time or means to submit vacation bids. They might be able to tell you which weeks you can choose from when you return or you can do your homework by looking at the final vacation awards on Flying Together and seeing what people junior to you got. I recommend the later since you can’t just take screenshots and email them in and tell them what you want. It went very smoothly for me.

his situation is a little different... I'm making the assumption he is coming back from long term mil leave. He needs to contact one of the two UAL ALPA Military Committee bubbas to get the skinny on what to do before he steps foot on property.

Thanks to everyone for the insight. I’ll contact the ALPA rep before I come back. Cheers.
