Late 40's seems to be the high end and late 20's seems to be the low end. Age 36-44 seems to be the middle third these days but every single class is different.

Lately it seems the bottom third is getting their choice of 756 or 756.

New Hire Classes and Drops

Thanks, I should be in a March class (Jan CJO) and am trying to get a feel for aircraft and bases, I will be commuting from Boise so SFO is probably my best bet. I was originally hoping for the 73, but with the last few drops it looks like I may be getting the 75 (I will be in the bottom 1/3 Of the class).

Take the 73 or 320 if you have the choice. On that aircraft you could always bid up if you see your seniority or schedule could be better on the 756. But starting on the 756 you’ll be locked to that airplane for 2 years since you can only bid up during a seat lock and 777 or 787 is far beyond 2 years to hold.... also SFO only flies the 757.

Does the company give you any stats regarding base, aircraft, seniority, etc prior to the drop on the first day, or do you have to do all your own research?

Ha!

I'm a civilian grandpa. I had a job for life which slowly turned into an unpleasant place to be for the rest of my career. Sometimes jobs turn into dead ends or jobs of last resort.

Oh yes, I've worked for 3 bankrupt airlines during the "bad decade".

I'm very happy I've been given the opportunity to join UAL. A lot of good things are happening now.

Happy bidding!

There are also some other bids available up the food chain.

Captain
DEN 737 CA 1
EWR 320 CA 10
SFO 320 CA 15

First Officer
EWR 777 FO 10
EWR 787 FO 10
DEN 787 FO 3
DEN 756 FO 10

Now none of these will go unfilled, but they may help with movement up from 756 FO folks that will result in more "unfilled" assignments in the 756 fleet as well.

EWR and SFO are prime candidates for a vast majority of the openings.

For the life of me I don't understand why a new hire would desire the 757.

The pay is the same as the 320/737.
You WILL be on reserve much much longer that the 320/737.
You will only fly EWR/BOS transcons from EWR/SFO.
or
You get to watch two other pilots make takeoffs and landings on the EWR to Europe and back flights.

Whats the attraction? Come on over to the Bus and get to know the Midwest or go to the Guppy and visit most everywhere else.

Looking at the most recent class drops it appears the junior guys/gals in each class don’t have a choice with the number of 756 mustfills.

Really no stats per-say, but your instructors should be able to answer any questions you might have regarding fleet size, types of flying, etc. They’ll typically give the drop within the first hour of class, then you bid in the afternoon after lunch. So use the time during your breaks in the AM to ask whatever questions you may have. There’s been so much movement, and still yet to come, that they may not have answers to specific questions (how long to hold this base, how long is reserve).
