No worries and thanks for the opportunity to explain. It's an honor to be Grumble's internet Piñata of the day, so I'll alway have that.

As mentioned in this thread, maybe the Hateful 8 are the good guys, I don't know who they are. But, I've seen the worst training in a 29 year airline career come outta that fleet, so hopefully my skepticism is understandable. When the inside joke was brought into the training briefing rooms, they opened themselves up to scrutiny.

I guess the only important thing in this thread is; can we find new-hire gouge for the 756?

So to answer your question, is it "for no reason"? No, I think there is a reason which could either be a reflection of the management culture or individuals who simply hate the repetition of the work. Maybe it's something else. And yes, there has been outward hostility and making training more difficult than it needs to be. Ask anyone who went through in winter of 2015 if they had reason to critique the transition course. To be fair, I understand that training is currently better in DEN than it was in IAH several years ago. Additionally, there ARE some awesome instructors in the fleet now.

So, when an inside joke stops being an inside joke in a fleet at TK that has a reputation for being tools, how should it be received?

A previous post mentioned that the Hateful 8 are the good guys. OK, cool, ironic name, but fine. The fleet needs good guys, seriously. Tagging the briefing rooms with their logos without letting line pilots in on the joke only helps to perpetuate a perception that it's business as usual.

You guys are pretty sensitive about this, any chance you work in the building? In the 787 fleet? I'm not butt hurt about anything, but as a schmuck line pilot I'd expect to have the training department help me learn an airplane, not, learn the airplane in spite of the training department.
I went through in the winter of 15/16 and agree with your assessment from that time. The program was deffinently arrogant and they had an extrem adversion to anything L-UAL and any way of doing it other than the L-CAL way.

However times have changed and every instructor I have had in DEN has been fantastic.

The Hateful 8 are 8 former L-UAL 756 instructors and evaluators that all came into the 787 fleet at the same time. That’s all it is nothing more.

I have worked with 3 of the 8 on the 756, all three were great and have a great sense of humor. I worked with 2 others in the 787 and I know the other 3 from passing. All of them are great and far from hateful that’s why it’s a joke.

Are you still on the fleet? Because it’s nothing like it was in IAH....in fact every instructor and evaluator I had is gone. There are 21 new instructors going through training now and they are finishing up hiring a half dozen evaluators. The entire program is being replaced in July with a brand new curriculum that is tailored to the 787. The old curriculum and foot print was an exact copy of the CAL 777 program.

There is no Butt hurt here I’m just correcting a statement that there is a group of 8 instructors that are proud of being a dick but that’s not the case at all.

That last thing I want to do is undermine good dudes, it sounds like you understand my skepticism and the reason for it. Thanks for painting these guys in the light that they deserve, I hope for everyone's sake they represent the sea change needed in that fleet. Still, that name!

I was awarded the 756 in this last vacancy and head out to Denver on Tuesday. The only thing I found on FlyingTogether is the 756 Aircraft Systems Study Guide. Doesn't seem like the gouge that floats around for Airbus.

Are these essentially all the questions on the SKV?

What are your suggestions on getting through it?

Thanks!

Short Answer, NO! The SKV questions are complete garbage compared to the question packet. Same questions that have been there for at least 20 years. They always have a proctor that stays in there since the questions are so horrible. You can know the systems, but when the questions are not straightforward and clear, and the answers are meant to be somewhat tricky and/or unclear as well, then what's the point. Not trying to whine. Been thru it more than once. Every other fleet is out of their SKV in 30-50 minutes but have seen guys in the 756 SKV for the full time of 3 hours. In fact, (straight from the person that I was trying to find questions for originally that went thru in June) "one of the proctors that has been on the plane for 20 years, was helping some of the students with their test, with some confusing questions. The proctor missed 2 questions." Can't make this stuff up!! I do know that the program syllabus was getting improved and the new format was suppose to be out in August(?). Don't think they got around to fixing the SKV yet, which has been critiqued from many that have gone thru. Definitely needs to be fixed.

During your lead up to your SKV your instructor should pass along the Q/A’s and as mentioned the actual test is a goat rope. A lot of mis-leading questions etc but the instructor monitoring will tell you if you do not know it mark it and at the end he will come over and help you figure it out. In the end very much a “non event”. Enjoy the training!

Unfortunately they just changed that. Instructors are asked to now not stay in the room and minimal help. They had two students fail it win the first week this occurred. I would not call this a "non-event" for a new-hire.

Wow, that’s bad news. I hope they have upgraded the exam to better reflect the systems then. If I had to take it without the “interpretation” help from the instructor I would have had to take it twice for sure.

Well, that seems unfortunate to read. I guess it's best to read all 2000 pages of the systems manual and memorize it? Maybe they'll let us use CRM :P
