They were unaugmented, they were on the back side of the clock after you are already Lagged from your mainland to NRT trip. They were flight planned at 7+ hours, like 7:55 they usually went over 8 hours actual. Once you get south of South China control you couldn’t understand another controller.
The layovers were great but those legs kind of sucked big time.

I see your Air India job and raise it with a crappy old DC-8 flying non sched international for 10 hours. Then doing a Pt 91 reposition for another 8 hours with no breaks, no food, no glass, no sel call, no GPS, and a narcoleptic/alcoholic/geriatric flight engineer with a bad attitude.

LCAL didn't fly TATL unaugmented for the last 20 years? I must've been in a Twilight Zone episode in late 2011 when I nonrevved EWR-CDG. I sat next to the deadheading third pilot who would be the IRO on the return trip and told me that this was a common practice and explained that it was cheaper to the company to deadhead him than fly the leg.
Anyway, circling back around to the original statement that I challenged (which opened up this entire thread derailment):
I don't think that the EWR 787 is going to go junior because of some unaugmented flying. I'll wager that it will be more senior than SFO 787.

A friend of mine commented that some of the augmented 756 routes out of EWR to Europe could do a lot of those trips un-augmented due to the 787's speed advantage. Didn't cross my mind until then. Then took a look at the Europe trips and their associated block time on the 756. Subtract 15-30 minutes off of the westbound portion and some of those routes could possibly fall into un-augmented territory (AMS, LHR, CDG). Hopefully the 787 routes that are announced don't fall there. If they do then the bid might not cause much chaos as many will avoid 2 man Atlantic flying.

Deadhead paid blended rate in 2011, he wasn't making less than "on duty, as you put it. He may have been the IRO, talking to you about something in the past.

No matter; it was an uaugmented TATL flight flown in 2011 which was prior to CPDLC so it's not like a TATL today is more complex than a few years ago.

Actually, thank to Jackson Martin, Tom Stivala, and the IAH scab contingent they considered a row in coach as an adequate rest facility.

You're way too defensive. Since you've stated blended rate more than once, if the equipment paid higher than the blended rate, then, yes, it was saving the company money for him to deadhead rather than being the IRO.

I recall lie flat seats weren't on the 757-200 till later.
But it was a good story.
Stivala and Martin were from EWR. Part of Fred Abbots PEX intern force.
