Default Jumpseating & 1st Class

Did some jumpsesting over the summer- it had been a while. Used to be jumpseaters always got a 1st class seat if one were available. Now EmployeeRes requires you to list “Economy” while jumpseating, & I’ve been seated repeatedly in coach on company metal with seats left open in 1st. Has something changed?

There were open seats in first? That's a change. To answer your question, no I don't think so.

Did you check in with the captain or just take a seat? Any captain that doesn’t offer you an open FC seat is a tool.

I haven’t seen open first class seats domestically in over a decade.

This. Open FC seats are unicorns.

If you let the Captain know you’re there, he/she will most likely upgrade you if a first class seat is available. The economy listing is irrelevant as far as where the Cap allows you to sit.

Was going to say...
I haven't seen any open first class since the days before September 11th....but other folks beat me to it.
Too many "segment upgrades", etc for frequent flyers, and last minute seat sales.... lucky to get an exit row window or aisle now if they haven't already sold them these days!

This...but I remember a captain asking me to please ride in the jump-seat on the door of a dc-9 (pre Sept 11th) saying it had been a very long trip and he would enjoy the company....guess he and the copilot weren't talking much...it was an interesting ride...
