You aren’t allowed to Carry PAX domestically. So QF LAX-JFK cannot carry LAX originating PAX. Intl they can do what ever they want. Just like the UA and DL hubs in NRT used to do.
What they cannot do is pick up passengers in LAX and fly them to JFK. It would also be legal to pick up passengers in LAX and fly them to LHR with a stop to pick up more passengers in JFK, but none of the LAX passengers would be allowed to get off at JFK. Two hours later those same planes (with the previous days crews) would fly to Melbourne or Brisbane.
