I started updating almost religiously about a year before I got hired. I cleaned up my app, had it reviewed, then sure enough I went through the hiring process and now I'm flying 756s out of the west coast, enjoying life.
I'd suggest always update and constantly QC the details listed on your app. Make sure your educational experience lines up for every school you've been from high school forward. If you have the time and can make it work, add some glitter on that resume and volunteer for a committee at your current union. The experience just might give you the push and perspective to make you successful in the hiring process. Good luck.

First application was back in the 1999-2000 time frame as a regional F/O with approximately 4,500 hours total time.
Went on mil leave and didn't update the application until the 2003-2004 time frame. Had applications in with both UAL and Continental. Have kept applications up to date and active since then.
Went to the Veteran's Day job fair in 2016. Got a Hogan invite in October 2017, bombed it. When I was eligible to retake it 12 months later, I was deployed. When I returned from deployment this past February, I updated the application and received a Hogan invite two weeks later. After completing it, I got the face to face invite two days later. Interview dates were two weeks out from that point.
So apply, keep updating, don't give up, and have one or two professional consulting companies do a resume/application review. I can personally recommend Cage Consulting.
Good luck!
