I’m hesitant to post anything with just a CJO. I’m not sure anything good can come from it. But when I interviewed pilots were involved in the hiring process both in the HR interview and the technical interview.

I think we need to be selective as to who gets in the office. The staff that works in the office I would consider not a player. The assistants and the flight managers should be running the office while the Chief does the interviews.

In my world (and I am ok with being in the minority), the Chiefs job should look like this:

1. hand out atta boys
2. only handle severe discipline
3. supervise assistant chiefs and staff
4. Interviews
5. Avoid all staff meetings and admin queep that you can't fix anyway.
6. buy coffee and donuts for staff
7. Go out and shake hands with the base pilots in the crew lounge 3 to 5 times a day.

Ok, that may be altruistic, but that' ok.
Except for the rare Chief Pilot, many chief pilots are worlds apart from the Line Pilot.

It's not ok.

When I was hired in 2013, Larry was the guy who interviewed me. He definitely had a cold personality.

Chief pilots are not pilots....they are management geeks who happens to have a pilot certificate.

The above is not necessarily true. It all depends on the person. You must have some bad experiences.

You nailed it. Our EWR base pretty much runs that way, luckily.

I think I know who you talking about. Went to SFO about 2 weeks ago and his name came up allot. Lawrence-Larry? He's no good. Sad to hear we have people like that in the office.

Yes, unfortunately, Larry is a real piece of work.

His latest, with the runway construction in SFO, he won't grant positive space commuter passes during a major disruption event at SFO. Something the other domiciles do all the time. No idea why.

I see your point... but at an airline this size, they simply have more than enough on their hands working to be excellent "Chief Pilots". Adding this to their plate is just not realistic.

It needs to be done by a group of pilots that are volunteers... have been vetted... and that know how to dig in to a pilot's past through their application, LoR's, and by other resources.

To do the "hiring job" well requires a lot of effort and focus from the interview pilots. The CP's don't have the bandwidth.
