They are senior. Its how seniority works.

Ok, same situation as OP, but I am moving to Long Island (pronounced Ston-Guylan), NY because family (smother-in-lahr. There, I said it). I am prepared to pay ALL the taxes, deal with the traffic, and all the other ancillary benefits associated with living in that little slice of paradise...
Is a 2 hour train ride from LI to EWR sustainable? Does anyone have experience with that commute? What about circumnavigating the city by auto? Or should I forego that adventure and fly DAL mostly out of LGA and JFK? I like both companies. I am mostly concerned with QOL (ironic, I know, moving to NY, but once again, it's for the family). From what I can gather as of now (prior to classing up), it seems like seniority prospects for me are better over the next 30 years at UAL. Thanks!

You can fly LGA at UAL. The NYC domicile covers EWR and LGA. 737 and 320 have trips in LGA.

Oops, No I was referring to Delta, I misread the post I quoted and thought they were referring to DAL vacation bidding. Senior folk at Delta can only bid either one week, or two consecutive weeks in round one of vacation bidding......but to be fair, most senior pilots can hold xmas off anyway, and if they bid xmas vacation they won't be able to greenslip it, so most senior folk would take the weeks in the summer on round one.

As said above . There are some that live in Long Island and do the commute . I would say all of them drive . There is no special route that is better that others . Depends on time of day . Otherwise you can go via train but it’s a bit of a pain . Long Island to Jamaica station then Long Island RailRoad to Penn station then New Jersey transit to EWR airport . Doable but I wouldn’t say it’s done often .

Otherwise bid 737/320 and you can focus on LGA trips mostly , which many people don’t want , On the Airbus they tend to be much more efficient than EWR .

Or just wait till the Jetblue Merger and you can fly out of JFK. 🙄👌😬

UAL and DAL and Long Island

UAL: easy drive to LGA for narrow body or painful drive/bus/subway to EWR for NB and WB stuff

DAL: easy drive to LGA for NB or easy drive to JFK for NB/WB stuff. Sit reserve in your house for either LGA or JFK.

Doesn’t DAL 717 guys have to cover EWR as well ? I know the Md-80 use too

Yes...so does the 737 and 320, but with NYC as the most junior base, those that stay will rise very quickly and their seniority will allow them to Heisman EWR in short time.

Silver (tin?) lining: if the people slotted above you had 7 years more longevity as well, they should be older (on average) and retire before you, so you might recoup some seniority later....

Your overall seniority might be better at UAL but that is largely negated by being NYC based since it is far and away the most junior base at DL. Within two years you could probably be top 20% on the A220 or 717, top 50% on the 737 or 320, or hold 764 (the most junior WB category at DL right now).
