Do some research on the test.

Take the questions at face value - do not read into them.

“I have never lied at work” is not an evaluation of your integrity… it counts towards your prudence score.

”I like fast cars” is not an assessment of your risk tolerance …it counts toward the “experiential” scale.

Always means always…like every time

Never means never…not one time ever

Also understand that it is unknown if it is a “screen in” vs “screen out” test. The test generates a full profile with specific trait scores. Only HR knows if they are screening in a specific profile or trait or screening out a specific profile or trait.

The test highlights your personality on your best day under highly self monitoring conditions so the “at work” suggestion at a the end of each question is valid.

Yes, being truthful is one thing but being able to fit into HR's preset scale of results is another thing.
If they are looking for good leaders and great team players like a pilot's role - do I enjoy crowds? do I read deep into life? do I feel depressed often?
I can be the best pilot but what if I am introvert depressed and likes to ponder deep into life, sure being honest wouldnt get me the job!

And lastly, should I enjoy crowds? Haha, i keep seeing this question on many sample tests. What is this geared towards? I enjoy crowds at work but also like being alone when I am off duty. So if i add "at work" at the end of all questions, i should ENJOY crowds??? Since Hogan is more about your WORK personality not your MANCAVE personality right?

Once again - it is impossible to guess what trait/profile is being screened in our out.

Go dig around on the Hogan Assessments website and see how the test works and why it is impossible to cheat on this test and why answering the way you think the company wants you to answer is a bad move. There is also a sample case for transportation pilots about how one company used the test. Also consider - the UPS profile an the UAL profile are likely not the same because nobody except HR knows what trait/profile is being screened in/out.

Just be consistent, honest and understand that extreme words like always/never will skew the results heavily towards one end of a spectrum score. Quoting from the sample profile:"Hogan found trends similar to the original study as strong performers had higher Adjustment, Ambition, Interpersonal Sensitivity, and Prudence scores compared to poor performers. However, strong performers also had higher Learning Approach scores than poor performers. In addition, Hogan found that high performing pilots are confident and rational (low Cautious), open to coaching (low Leisurely), good team players (moderate Dutiful), and make good decisions and think before they act (low Mischievous)."

The UAL profile may contain some or all of the above traits as the "go" profile...alternatively they might care less and are looking to avoid the person that demonstrates a low "interpersonal sensitivity" score....nobody knows!
If you pass - great - you can have confidence that you have the trait that UAL wants. If you fail - you might have the trait that UAL doesn't want but its not a reflection of your skills as a pilot or judgement of your character. It is what it is...

The "likes crowds" question feeds the "sociability" trait. It is unknown if UAL even looks at the Sociability trait. They might not care where you fall on the sociability scale! They may only care about "learning style" or "adjustment". You could be stressing yourself out over a question that doesn't even matter!

Edited to add - my understanding is that UAL is using the HPI test and not currently using the HDS - aka the "dark side" exam.

I just recently used a course for the United airlines selection process. I passed the hogan, and shortly after went to the interview but was given the ‘No’ due to an error within my private pilot log book carrying over hours into my electronic logbook. And also an admin error within my application that stated I had a 3.3 gpa in college but my transcript showed 3.0. I believe these 2 things set me back in the review board. My question to you all is have you heard of any pilots getting reselected for an invite after completing an interview prior to 12 months. If not what, in your opinion, would be the best course of action to possibly get UAL to shorten that time frame? Thanks in advanced

my understanding is the computer selection will de-select your for 12 months then your app is back in the mix. I was given a no and figured I was done but somewhat after the 12 month mark was invited again and passed. I know it’s a big blow to ego but fix the errors, get your app reviewed by a quality company, Cage for United, but ECC is good as well, update your app every other week, stay positive. In this environment you will get an interview somewhere and maybe again at United. Own your mistakes when asked and demonstrate what you learned ( I.e. provide a concrete, verifiable example). Good luck. Never give up, life could be much worse.

Here’s your Hogan prep…

Take a Valium, maybe have a cocktail on top of it in a quiet room with your computer. Wait ten minutes then take the test. Answer the questions honestly, and don’t take more than 3-5 seconds to answer.

Wayyy over thinking things IMO. When you read a question, you will have an almost immediate, initial response in your head - that should be your answer. Read Grumble's post below re time to answer; best advice ever. I got to the end and was like, sh$t, its over?? I got it, if you're truly depressed a lot and answer honestly, it will probably not generate great results. But I still think its better than trying to game the system and answer what 'they' want to hear. I believe that type of answering is easily and quickly flagged. Also as someone mentioned earlier - the qualifiers are pretty easy - I never this, I always that and the strongly agree, strongly disagree... I believe out of the entire Hogan I maybe answered 2 or 3 with strongly - most were middle of the road agree/disagree. One I remember that received a strongly disagree was, someday people will recognize my importance...

Anyone know how long it takes to hear back from them after taking the personality assessment? I talked to guy while commuting who said he got the good news after two days, it’s been a week (5 business days) for me. Will they let me know one way or the other if I didn’t get it? Should I reach out to someone at some point? Thanks
