Time to carry extra fuel for tower issues
#21
If there were ever a reason to carry contingency fuel, this is it, with multiple ATC centers and towers closing sporadically.
With jet fuel now under $1/gallon, it's less than $300 to carry an extra 2000 lbs of fuel. It buys time to hold rather than divert. And if everything goes OK, you're not going to burn 2000 lbs of fuel by carrying it as insurance.
Now, what's a divert cost?

Prior planning prevents **** poor performance... or whatever. The arrival rate will decrease by 80-90% minimum if a large airport goes uncontrolled.
Not having extra gas now would be the same as not having an alternate for 1-2-3... We carry extra gas for a 1900’ BKN layer... How often do you divert on those days?
Just do it
