Agreed. Hoping the renegotiating TA goes well for you all.

This is true & unfortunately I think is crushing our resolve to fight for meaningful pay increases. With the 15% or so we’ve lost to inflation since our last bump, NB FO is no longer meeting a lot of people’s needs. But since pretty much anyone can hold NB CA now, it’s not seen as a problem- just upgrade in 12 months if you need more $$$! Obviously that’s not a realistic long-term solution. FO will go back to a decade+ gig eventually. It used to pay accordingly & needs to keep up with the changing times.

Some bases the reserve schedule , while unpredictable will be similar to what they are holding as FO. But as a captain the pay increase from year 1 FO to year 2 captain is easily 10k when you include 401k

HUGE difference between holding that schedule for 6 months as an FO or 6-10 yrs as a CA lol. But there will always be some that don’t care they just want the 4th stripe. I value my family and life way more than a few extra dollars. But that’s the beauty of this career, choices.

If I was in such a situation I’d personally do it for two years, make about 200k more over that time then downgrade to a higher FO % of WB FO. Like you said having the choice is amazing and not to be taken for granted.

I’m just saying for the pay and relatively similar schedule it would make sense to do it imo

Indeed. First year FO doesn’t qualify you for a mortgage on a house in a lot of the junior bases. That isn’t viable over the long haul.

Forget buying a house, I can't even qualify for a 1 bed/bath in the bay area on first year pay. A 650 sqft apartment is $3000/month not including utilities in an area where you probably won't get shot walking to your car. 90k is well below the poverty line in the Bay Area. Average salary is about $150k

That is why the majority of pilots in SFO are commuters……..

So, newbie question here (start BI in a couple weeks). I see that there were only 4 total FO slots available for DCA and they were for WB. Does this mean that DCA slots (esp NB DCA slots) are going to be super hard to come-by?

this vacancy closes in 10 days, whatever is left over will go to new hires. If you want NB in dca and you don’t get it initially it won’t take long.

They “shouldn’t” be. The advertised positions for NB FOs on the coasts are often positions that will go to new hires. DCA is historically fairly easy to get as a NB FO. Even if you don’t get DCA initially you could probably get EWR and then lateral to DCA possibly even before leaving the school house. We’ll know much more in the coming week as snapshots start getting posted. I wouldn’t be surprised for more to open up as NB FOs bid the open WB slots on the bid.

Congrats on the job!. It’s a tumultuous time atm with the TA and ALPA drama on top of it being the silly season for ALPA National elections, but with that said I’ve really enjoyed 95% of the pilots I’ve flown with over the last 26ish years. Just a lot of people fed up with being told “We’ll get ‘em next time” on the contract. It’s now NEXT TIME
