Currently I’m a SWA FO on mil leave with my 1yr at SWA coming up next month. I’ve already decided I’m leaving SWA, but I have a good problem I’m contemplating.

I’m 28, mil duty is in MCO, home is in IND. I really really like Delta, but I’d be foolish not to consider United with the MCO base. I have a CJO/Class Date with Delta and have an interview soon with United.

ATL/NYC/DTW work really well for me with Delta. MCO/ORD/EWR work well with United. I want to fly widebodies and both have that. Delta has a better contract and brand, but United’s bases could allow me to easily live in base.

Both seem like really good options. A lot better than SWA in the current market. My only worry is with recession possibly looming, of a furlough.

Would one carrier be better than the other when it comes to furlough protection? Is there something more I should consider before I make a decision? I’m leaning strongly Delta, but I don’t want to overlook United.

You have the class date at DAL. Get your seniority number there and worry about the rest later. Don’t stress a furlough. It’s just as likely at either company if things go south. You also have the option of trying to get a full time Guard/Res gig if that happens. I know MANY who did just that the last time we furloughed.

Depends on what you’re prioritizing.

If you’re going to do the whole live within driving distance of base from IND, and bid reserve thing… DAL
Pay, and opportunity to make money… DAL
Commute… DAL

MCO 737… UAL

yeah IND is the priority over MCO so the reserve long call definitely could work well

Go to Delta! Delta will always be stronger operationally and financially than U.
In fact, I’m telling as many new guys that I’m flying with that they need to rethink U and look at Delta.

Deltas 18hr reserve call out no involuntary conversion or rolled days off and Rolling thunder ability disagree.

Delta over UA for sure if you're going to be commuting.

UA's seniority based jump-seating sucks, their reserve rules aren't as good, etc.

If IND is a long term priority I'd stay at SWA or go to DL and maybe try for FedEx when they hire again. IND 767 FOs simply don't work on reserve. (50ish hours a year max). Or go to DL and be a 717 captain in DTW.

Yeah with IND being my goal, plan was to originally leave SWA for DAL or FDX. But FDX stopped hiring and Delta called. United doesn’t seem like a bad option because of ORD, but I also don’t know much about the work rules at UAL just seems like ORD could be very doable at IND.
