I'm currently living in FL with the desire to move elsewhere. Denver has always been on our "list". I qualify for CA and will be relatively low on my seniority list given my age so I'm considering either bidding (hopefully it's available) DEN 737 CA and moving out there to live in base or bidding 737 FO and then potentially transferring to DEN when the option arises.
1) Is there something that I am completely missing about being awarded a CA slot out of initial? Besides being on reserve for a while (which doesn't bother me), it seems like a no brainer? 2) Reserve forever....what's the timeline to get off reserve as a DEN CA or systemwide 737 CA? 3) Where's the reference for callout times? I have looked through 20-K a bit and haven't seen any reference to specific times that have been thrown out here. 4) Anyone know of a reserve rules gouge? Any other information is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks |
I've seen some varying opinions on the pay timeline. If awarded, does CA pay automatically begin at 350 hours of United time?

1) No, there's a reason captain has historically been senior. It pays well. Reserve living in base isn't awful
2) Longer than your seat lock. You will be an FO for one year, a captain on reserve for two years then you can move to something else if you desire 3) by the time you get to captain it should be mostly 18 hour for long call and 2 hours for short call. It's a complex system - bottom line it's fine if you live in base 4) see #3, but there are a lot of changes coming to the contract and has yet to be seen how things really work in practice cool alright thanks for all that info |

Given the MAX-9 debacle and delay (potential deferral?) of the MAX-10. It’s quite likely to see a significant decrease in Captain slots for new hires in the near future. Could you be happy being a mere new hire first officer?

Reserve “forever” is a bit dramatic. However, I will say you will get really tired of being effed with after a year or two on reserve. Thankfully your seat lock will be up and you can bid out. Reserve rules have improved with the current contract, but it still sucks.
Thanks for your input |

Not always the case for a variety of reasons
1) most military pilots don't meet the requirements 2) no part 91 pilots meet the requirements 3) yes there's a decent subset of CFI>regional regular guys and gals getting hired with less that 1000 hrs 121 time ... and 987 doesn't cut it I have always in my mind have kept the military pilot requirements seperate but points 2 and 3 are a new animal for me - thanks for the update 👊🏻 |

If you get slapped with an unwanted CA slot because you're junior in the class are you able to let someone else take it that didnt get the slot they wanted in indoc? Hearing some rumors of people potentially getting out of a CA slot they didn't want.

Plenty of military pilots - especially fighter pilots - have NO time that counts for CA upgrade but there is in fact a special UA program to help recruit them. Perhaps 'moronic' was unkind, but you were misreading the initial question. |
