Questions about ALPA volunteer pay
Delta guy here - our MEC is proposing changes to how union volunteers are compensated for their time. The big change is to go to 6 hours of pay for each day in the office. People on full time buy work 18 days in the office in ATL, so they'd be geting 108 hours per month. Part timers would get the 6 hours for each day in the office, plus a couple of travel days per moth that also pay 6 hours. In a brief outline, what is the pay structure for ALPA work over at UA?

All ALPA volunteers must submit their planned ALPA work days (Union Business Paid or UBP) along with the associated UAL MEC Policy Manual non-work days (Union Business Unpaid or UBU) prior to PBS opening for the specified month. As an example, preblocks for ALPA work for April would be due this week in time for them to be blocked when PBS opens first week of March. Each ALPA UBU and UBP are blocked at 3:00 hours of credit in PBS whether on full-time or part-time flight pay loss (FTFPL or PTFPL). When the schedules are published and the pay sheets are loaded, each UBU "blocker" day is assigned 0 hours of pay and each UBP is assigned 5:15 of pay. So if a rep is attending a five-day MEC meeting, as an example, in PBS for bidding he/she would have 3 UBUs and 6 UBPs (the Policy Manual was changed to allow reps to get paid for their travel day(s) to the MEC meeting such as Sunday). That's 9 ALPA days @ 3:00 hours of credit or 27:00 pre-assigned credit. They will actually get paid for 6 days @ 5:15 per day or 31:30. Everything adjusts accordingly from 1 day of ALPA work to an entire month of ALPA work.
A committee member or MEC officer on FTFPL will be paid for 18 days @ 5:15 per day or 94:30 per month. An ALPA pilot on FTFPL who wishes to fly a trip for currency "flies back" the trip amount and does not get extra pay. I believe there are less than 25 pilots on FTFPL (94:30 hours of pay).
Also, GUM reps get many more ALPA UBUs and UBPs due to the distance they have to travel TO/FR meetings. I think by the time they get home they have to leave for the next one already. (J/K).

And keep in mind that some days are restricted from placing ALPA days, like holidays. I think the mec should up the pay for ALPA work, as it stands right now they can end up losing money or working more days for the same money depending on the fleet.

I’m an unpaid ALPA volunteer and I think it’s funny saying you volunteer and get paid. IMHO ALPA “volunteers” shouldn’t make more than 90 hrs if they’re in the office full time. If you’re a part timer you can make MPG per day. Do they think they are members of US Congress and can vote their own compensation packages?😳
So, I do not agree with you on this point. And, no, I have never been a pilot of FTFPL when I did union work at my previous carrier or this one.

If you are a line pilot (reserve or line holder) and you show up to fly 18 days in a month, you are paid 5.25 per day or 94.5 hours per month. A pilot on FTFPL is not entitled to the same pay a line pilot would get (at minimum)? Yes, MPG is either 70 or 73 hours depending on if a pilot is a line holder or reserve. However, for that, they are not showing up every day of the month.

You are correct.
I’m hitting the age where it’s easier to have a discussion than type on a forum. Instead of doing math, I’ll try to get to the point. You shouldn’t make more than line pilots when you’re supposed to be representing line pilots.

or all those pilots who brag about picking up premium pay trips?
Its easy for line pilots to make more then the full time ALPA volunteers. And many do.
