How does merger seniority get handled?

No CAL wasn't hiring, because there was no "CAL" anymore. Don't conflate management's decision to hire and place those pilots on the former CAL side of the still separate operation with "CAL was hiring". That's a gross exaggeration and a SLI "talking point". It didn't work as the Arbitrators saw through it.

“Well, this is a brilliant audience. That’s about how I feel about it, too. I think it’s a unique environment that …where M&A is possible. We’ll see how that plays out. But I do think that this industry would benefit from some.”
I wouldn’t read much into it tbh

The only response to mergers was
“Well, this is a brilliant audience. That’s about how I feel about it, too. I think it’s a unique environment that …where M&A is possible. We’ll see how that plays out. But I do think that this industry would benefit from some.”

Mergers make stronger competition, why would a CEO say that mergers would be good for the industry unless he wanted to be somehow involved in said merger? Obviously it's not an announcement, but it definitely indicates that Scott is interested in mergers happening - and I doubt he means Alaska buying B6.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t see it happening until the mid 2030s after UnitedNext is settled

That wasn’t Scott, it was the CFO. Maybe it means they’re open to one, but I don’t think it’ll happen until UnitedNext is settled with deliveries, hiring, and network. Mergers are costly and take a lot of time. United can grow organically faster than if it were to merge with another airline. If competitors merge, it’ll take away time and money that they could use to compete with United and it’ll force competitors to get rid of certain things like gates and routes. Gates and routes United could swoop in and take.
