Now of course during a transition course where you are getting typed or requaled on an airframe there is an extensive SKV (systems, knowledge, evaluation.) And I am guessing you have the same when getting initial training on type.

Hoss.....
The only 'oral' exam that a pilot will see at CAL (Initial Type or otherwise) is a PC based 100 (or very close to that number) question multiple choice exam. As far as having an "old school" oral with a check pilot firing questions/scenarios live and in person is something that does not exist at CAL.

With all due respect, why is there such a concern with the specific details of our training events?

With all due respect, it was just that, a question.

At CAL we do not get quizzed, per say, during our yearly sim checks. I've heard at UAL you get a pretty thorough grilling during yours. Just was trying to get the facts.

I'm not try to hammer you, I just wonder why so many are concerned about minor details at each others schoolyard when I'm concerned whether or not I will be given the opportunity to strike. The only way we are going to kill this scope issue, improve work rules and pay is to strike or take it to the 11th hour.

I completely agree but it is good to find out other things in advance. I've been longing for the chance to strike so we're in the same boat there.

Our SKV is a 100 question multiple choice test on a computer there is no longer an old style anything goes oral with an examiner. But there used to be.

Hi Driver, They don't grill you at all... it is VERY basic stuff. In the oral they go over hot items, FOQA data, how to use the new "learning network," bla bla bla... there are a few very LOFT type questions, "what is your FAR fuel burn listed on flight plan based on, (altitude, wt)" "how do you know if you are in an over water aircraft," " if you aren't in an overwater aircraft how far overwater can you go," We have manuals in the oral with you and you may reference them to look up answers. They ask you a few "memory" items, what happens if you have tail torching (go to QRC, memory checklist (probably should know that it is on the QRC), complete the QRC using the actual checklist.. there are almost NO memory items any more.. :) "When do you balance fuel?" (we only do when we get an ecam on the bus (about 3,300 pounds diff)... yada yada... VERY VERY VERY VERY line oriented orals- no grilling, in my experience, at least... I am sure there was a day, back on the 727 era where they expected you to build the systems, but those days- from my experience- are gone.

Just my 2 cents :)

Thanks GB, thats exactly what I was asking about.

kru... are you a 570? or were you hired just after the strike? I can imagine that TK was "challenging" back in the day :(

Hmm, I guess you never sat in on a tri-motor crew getting a check ride from a Scab Check Airman. I came on the property almost one year after the strike ended. Got the letter to be a 570 but turned it down and waited until you would actually get a job if you passed the training. Strange times in those days and all I can say is that those 570 guys that stood firm, had a big set of you know what. My hat is off to those brave guys (and gals). Threats, some. The worst part of it all is that we did not get "half wings" out of training so we were forced to walk around as "slick ties" until we made it to an LEC meeting. Talk about not being welcomed...

My question is ,why did the 570 take the offer in the first place? They had to know what they were getting into. Only after ALPA and Jamie got a hold of them did they find religion. Yeah yeah I know, this has nothing to do with CAL/UAL, just one of those questions lingering. When you fly with some of the 570, you will find they are not short of opinions. Good to fly with, just not short of opinions.

To be honest, the only reason why I didn't take the 570 offer was my chief pilot would not give me a LOA to take the training. I was flying small jets at the time and those jobs were hard to come by back then. Also, I really had no clue tha UAL was attempting to build a scab pool to take on ALPA. My letter to decline the 570 offer stated that I was declining their offer but if any plans changed to please let me know.
From what I understood, Jamie did a great job giving those 570 "religion"
