“extensive partying behavior,”
My favorite line, from my favorite episode (Road to Rhode Island), of my favorite show (Family Guy), goes something like this:
Stewie: "Hey look an Airplane!"
Brian: "You know what that means!"
Stewie: "No, What?"
Brian "Where there's an airplane, there's an airport. ...And where there's an airport there's a pilot. ...And where there's a pilot there's a bar, which means we can finally get a drink!"
"Extensive partying behavior", just so happens to be my favorite line from the CAL MEC update from the 10-15-2010 Email this afternoon. The problem is, it doesn't make me want to laugh...
What gives? Reading between the lines is probably worse than if all the mud slinging would have just been an open fist fight baring everyone's dirty laundry for all to see. Is there any way to predict if management will have their way with the pilots obscenely, or does this open the door for the UAL pilots to take advantage of the CAL pilot's leadership crisis, in which case CAL pilot will be doubly screwed?

You have to hand it to the DAL MEC, they never Sh#% on the floor in public. They deserve our admiration for maneuvering the election of what some people describe as a quasi management tool. We probably will never know if they only wanted to kick him upstairs where he could not do any real damage. But, in either case, it was a job well done!

Not sure how to take this new ESPN commercial featuring pilots. It plays into a public perception of pilot as bus driver but, once there are iPads and wifi on the planes it is no doubt predicting the next screw up--they overflew the airport because they were watching game seven.

It is funny though.

The video is funny....if it were only played to pilots and made by a pilot. Unfortunantely, this is the public perception of us in 2012.
Thing is about this pilot gig, we are all highly and specifically trained. The other thing is most (well, many) pilots are fairly matter of fact. We do our job and go home. We don't embellish, (except to other pilots) we don't fluff things up, we are taught to think of nothing but what relates to a safe flight.
In the media and marketing driven society we live in this attitude doesn't do our profession any favors. We don't make a big deal out of the daily challenges of our jobs because...well, it's our job, we are trained to do it very well and we have done it 1000's of times.
How many times have we been at a dinner party and someone asks us ridiculous questions. Have you ever been scared? You don't really fly the jet anyway, right? I will never fly on (insert airline here) because they are horrible.....Many travelers truly believe that the autopilot has "TAKEOFF" "LAND" "LAX" "ORD" "IAH" "MIA" buttons and the computer does everything. I always cringe when some pilot says on the PA "Welcome aboard, blah blah, looks like the computer is telling us we will arrive at 632" Of course they think the computers do everything, we flat out tell them that on a PA!
The reason aviation is the safest form of travel isn't because of computers, it's because of highly trained, experienced pilots. Take the experienced pilot out of the loop and this safety is compromised. I'm not saying we all need to walk around with our noses in the air with our big douchy watches lighting the way but a little humble professional PR goes a long way be it at that dinner party or on the PA.
