"Also a bulletin out for 737 instructor, with an added paragraph that if an F/O is selected, he will be trained up to a captain, and if he flies a trip, it will be only with management in the right seat."

In the UAL 1981 "Blue Skies" contract the professional instructors were replaced with TCAs (Training Check Airmen) who were by seniority F/Os. They were trained as Captains in the airplane they instructed and checked in. They also received a full UAL 121 Captain line check by the FAA in the left seat.

Out of these TCAs came the first scab captains in the UAL strike of 1985. They lead the way across the picket line.

Could UAL/CAL mgmt be planning something for 2012? Sure looks fishy and considering UAL has a PI agreement which prevents such qualifications I would expect t see all the CAL F/O Instructors being similarly qualified.

If we don't learn from history shame on us!

That's why if you go to any mgmt function, you resign your seniority. You have to decide if you want to cross a line sooner than later. At CAL, most guys are of the mindset that scabs happened so long ago that it is long ago. Time heals the wounds/mistakes is not the right mindset. Just like a felon, you paid your time for the crime but you still have a record.

I'm not sure I follow your analogy about scabs and felons. Some felons go to prison and pay a debt to society and carry that record, what is the equivalent for scabs? Not sure how it is at CAL, but UAL scabs are not seen as having "paid their time".

The closest they get to that point is when they repay the $$$ earned from the time operating during the strike. A few, very few, did in fact pay it back.

But even doing that didn't wipe the slate clean.

But I would be willing to drink a beer with the felon.

I hear the jokes and the bitterness, but one has to be careful about calling some one a "scab" who isn't currently one.

My issue is this, UAL/CAL management aren't a bunch of fools, like the MECs, who are telling people to be ready for a strike in 2012 management will make plans to fly through a strike. If this "Captain" qualification and flying of CAL F/O seniority instructors is something new then one has to assume they, management, are planning for the future. They will push every limit until pushed back effectively including building up a bunch of potential strike breakers.

However isn't it sad, all Jeff and Company had to do was treat with respect and honor all UAL/CAL employees and lead them into the biggest and best airline in the world. Alas more of the same management style which began with Lorenzo and his disciples.

Default Ual fom?

CAPTAIN FLYING AS FIRST OFFICER

NON-AUGMENTED CREW
The Captain acting as a First Officer must be a qualified LCA.

If so, CAL wouldn't get through the summer with that one.

Just in case you missed out on the opportunity......There's yet another new position. FODM, Flight Ops Duty Manager. Looks like there's plenty of wealth to create these new positions. FUPM.....and you wouldn't need a FODM.
