Mediator tells pilots, United to keep quiet - Houston Chronicle Jerry Glass, president of labor and employment law consulting firm F&H Solutions Group, said voluntary or court-imposed gag orders are rare but not unprecedented in labor negotiations. He and others suggested the public silence may indicate that a deal is close - or at least that negotiations have reached a critical stage. "Obviously they're in an important stage of negotiation and the mediator wants to ensure that there are as few outside distractions as possible," Glass said. "When communication blackouts go into effect, it's because the parties are serious about trying to reach an agreement and they want to focus their sole attention on negotiations and nothing else," said Glass, a former executive vice president and chief human resources officer for U.S. Airways. |
CAL MEC Update (From the Chairman) July 12, 2012 Dear Fellow Pilots: On Wednesday, along with ALPA President Captain Lee Moak and Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) Co-Chairmen Phil Otis and Dave Owens, we met with National Mediation Board (NMB) member Linda Puchala and our two mediators. The NMB thanked the pilot groups for complying with the NMB’s informal gag order on negotiations. The group then discussed the current state of negotiations and possible solutions for bringing these negotiations to conclusion. Management will have a similar meeting with the NMB today. Following the conclusion of that meeting, the NMB will come back to the parties with suggestions for the process going forward. As soon as we have more information on future negotiations, we will pass it on to you. United, Capt. Jay Pierce CAL MEC Chairman Capt. Jay Heppner UAL MEC Chairman |

"future negotiations". Lovely.
|
Remember in a cooling off period it will be a series of intense negotiations. Don't read to much in to that. They are tasked with getting a JCBA not a strike.
|
Agreed.
But it is put up or shut up time for the NMB. Meaning: Will they do what it takes for this to get done?(release) Or let management have total control? (continue stalemate negotiating) Either way, you might want to short UAL stock. |

What transpires mostly depends upon how the NMB feels about the respective positions of the parties (ie, which is more "reasonable" given negotiations to date and the industry) and the obvious politics of an election year. It has very little to do with "put up or shut up."
